FBI, THE ROOKIE, FBI: MOST WANTED

THE ROOKIE – “The Hammer” The team comes together to celebrate John and Bailey’s wedding; meanwhile, Celina discovers a discrepancy in her case, leading to a new discovery. Elsewhere, Lucy and Tim’s relationship is put to the test. TUESDAY, FEB. 27 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on ABC. (Disney/Raymond Liu)
MELISSA O’NEIL, ALYSSA DIAZ, JENNA DEWAN, MEKIA COX

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

FBI: Oh, OA. Three weeks and you’re like this with Gemma?! Also, good luck to this relationship. It seemed quasi-doomed no matter what, as soon as he realized Gemma’s friend was tied up in a case, but now it is so much messier.

To be “fair,” Kate made her decisions. They tried to protect her, tried to get her to run, but rather than listen, she ran back and blew the agents’ cover and got shot in the mess. But…Gemma is not going to care about the technicalities. Especially when OA was only able to rope her in because of his tie to Gemma. And now keeping this secret? Yeah. Good luck, buddy.

I’m sure the majority of the focus of Maggie’s, uh, long-distance ride on the hood of a car (!!) will be how absolutely badass she was—completely fair, honestly—but wow to the emotional impact of the moment, too. It wasn’t that long ago she was injured in the line of duty and the absolute panic OA had before he reached her was weighted with that history. (Whether it was intentional or not.)

THE VOICE: Wow, to OK3 picking John! (A good choice, to be clear, but not what I was expecting.)

The most interesting element of the coaching battle this season may be the country element. As it was noted, this is the first time we’ve had two country acts/coaches battling for people. It certainly made the blocks more calculated and fun. (And Dan+Shay using theirs on Reba when an act sang a ’90s-era female country song? Brilliant.) That being said, this is also a show that has heavily leaned into the country world in its winners, so it’s not like that aspect of it actually needed the boost…we’ll see.

THE FLOOR: This was always the risk of the show, but having a virtually unknown winner take it all was…probably not ideal. And I don’t really know how you fix it, don’t know how you change things without fundamentally shaking up the core of the show, but it certainly emphasizes that the format needs to be the draw, not a player.

And, hey, they might not want to swap things up! This may work. But maybe in a subsequent season if/when you hit 42 spots, you’re guaranteed a spot in the finale, or something like that. We’ll see how things go.

FBI: INTERNATIONAL: Oh, Powell caused trouble. It has to be hard when you’re in a tight-knit group and you break up, but showrunner Matt Olmstead was absolutely correct when he said Powell’s observation about the Vo-Raines dynamic was petulant. And now he’s in Vo’s head…this will blow up (figuratively, please, show), and I’m so curious how it does.

THE ROOKIE: LOVE. And I’m not just talking about those Chenford “I love you”s. So much happened in the hour, but it never felt artificially stuffed. There were great relationship beats, funny friendship moments, and some bonkers action. There was a wedding where basically everything went wrong in the lead-up. It had everything!

I know Harper hasn’t been as warm and cuddly as Celina might like, but I am so happy for all of their sakes that Harper called out what was happening with Aaron and Celina. It doesn’t mean they cannot be friends! But they are trauma-bonded, and it’s not healthy for either of them if he’s only relying on her. But now that Aaron tried to kiss her…oh boy. I hope he can actually talk to his therapist going forward, because he’s still going through things and he can’t keep it bottled up if he can’t talk to Celina.

There was obviously a bit of angst with the UC and Tim’s reluctance for that, but I loved the Chenford lie detector scene. It was sweet, sexy, romantic, but also vulnerable and open. I also appreciate that Tim wasn’t intentionally lying to Lucy—he was lying to himself. It’s a good way to have them both be right, while still keep the drama simmering. At the end of the day, they love each other, and fingers crossed they can find a way to make it work.

(I so deeply loved the dance scene/wedding reception. Let this be a reminder to writers of other shows that characters who love each other and go through constant traumas can let loose and have fun for a few minutes. I promise it only makes the stakes for everything else that much more profound.)

A few other things:

  • Laughed out loud at “Daddy Cop.” (Okay, it’s also still in my head.)
  • Harper and Lopez talking about the lengths they went to in order to find the right outfit and their husbands being like, “And I’m wearing a suit” killed me a little. (In a good way.)
  • Well, Tim being on bended knee for Lucy was sure something, even if it was in the aftermath of a fight. I know she said it was a while off, but…
  • Maybe the most unconventional walk down the aisle possible? Was there an aisle? It was almost a magic trick.
  • I hope the dog is okay.

[For more on the episode, here’s what the team shared.]

FBI: MOST WANTED: It did not hit me when I saw the episode title, but wow was this an episode of THE X-FILES. (I mean that as a compliment. And, yes, I know this is very much a title that has been reused a billion times.)

But, seriously, the AI was killing people!! (Okay, with the assistance of a grief-stricken man.) Obviously, it’s timely in the aftermath of the industry strikes, but it’s also an evergreen story.

I’m SO glad Remy brought up his brother, though, in the end, because it would have been a glaring mistake and disservice to the show’s history to not touch on his own previously overwhelming grief. It’s not hard to imagine he would have done something similar at various points, but I’m glad he could work on a case like this and not spiral.
