CHICAGO MED: Andrew Schneider Previews Ripley’s Encounter with an Old Friend
February 28, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
On the Wednesday, February 28 episode of CHICAGO MED, Ripley (Luke Mitchell) is tasked with treating an old friend.
“He grew up as a tough kid, kind of on the streets, [from] a broken home,” CHICAGO MED co-showrunner Andrew Schneider tells Give Me My Remote. “And he ran with a tough crowd. He changed his life, but some of his old friends have not. He has a patient who is one of those guys.”
And though Ripley has an extensive history with Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt), who treated Ripley when he was young, Ripley’s friend “did not share Ripley’s experience of psychiatric care.”
Though Ripley is still relatively new to the scene, he has one person on his side: Hannah (Jessy Schram).
“We want to continue that push-pull between those characters,” Schneider teases. “I mean, they’re very attractive people, very good at what they do. They work in a kind of pressure cooker, which can lead to its own intimacy. So we’ll develop that.”
One romance that seems doomed, though, is Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) and Ben (Charles Malik Whitfield). After Ben requested a divorce—and Maggie signed paperwork—“It looks like Maggie and Ben are divorced,” Schneider says. “She’s in a place where she’ll begin to think about moving on in her life, romantically.”
No matter what, they’ll all have their hands full with work—including new resident Zola (Sophia Ali), who has been a wild card for everyone in the ED.
“Archer, since he’s become boss of the ED, has become much more cognizant of rules and protocols,” Schneider says. “So he does not want his residents stepping out of line…It’s like all converts: They get really tough on the other side.”
