About Last Night…MASTERCHEF JUNIOR, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND, and More

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!
MASTERCHEF JUNIOR: Oh my gosh, this is a NIGHTMARE task. Also, I’m sorry, cooking something like oysters—in theory—is a lot harder than cooking tomatoes or cheese.
I’m sad we lost Lilo, because she was really creative. But, yeah, if your main ingredient isn’t a star/is botched, you’re likely going home.
THE VOICE: As noted, John hitting steal for someone singing “All of Me” is huge. Loved that Reba was moved to tears, too.
Justin and Jeremy Garcia being saved for Team Reba was the right choice, because, wow, their voices together were fantastic, but, wow, that was the one Knockout where I really wish both acts had been safe.
AMERICAN IDOL: It’s ridiculous Jayna Elise was in the bottom, but I’m glad the judges saved her. I’m absolutely baffled by their decision to let Ajii go, though, who gave great performances the past two nights. An absolute shame they didn’t utilize their power to save him.
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: I’m extremely mixed on this. On one hand, this worked way better than any of the previous episodes, but it also didn’t feel like it utilized the dancers. After having the audition episodes be, frankly, messy, it almost would have served them well to give us one episode just having the dancers getting used to being in the Top 10 and their new home versus squeezing in that, plus a group performance, plus the music video, plus the eliminations all in one episode.
I know this is basically moot at this point since this season was already filmed, but if the purpose of this is to see the dancers in these true-to-life dancing experiences, we should probably be seeing them? It felt like so much of the music video was spent on the judges’ reaction to what they were seeing. If you really want to do that, show a box in the corner. I couldn’t tell you who was good or great or only okay based on what we saw. I couldn’t even tell you who made me want to see more. It’s really hard to invest in anyone. Alas.
DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: I’m sorry, but Amy is rude. It’s a game, absolutely, but if one of your contestants is falling apart in front of you, maybe don’t double down on making them feel worse. (Love Rob and Aron, though, and how Rob is acknowledging he wants to win, but he also wants to make sure Aron is good.)
Dawson’s first round was basically the best first round ever/possible? Wow. But, yeah, I absolutely do not blame him for self-evicting, because $100,000 to eliminate yourself is life-changing. That’s the final prize on a lot of other shows. Good for him.
