About Last Night…LAW & ORDER, GHOSTS, LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, and More

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!
LAW & ORDER: We so rarely get to see Dixon highlighted, and I appreciated how this episode played out—both because we got to meet her son and I actually didn’t guess the “twist.” (I was convinced the daughter was the real culprit.)
I’m sure we won’t be able to get follow-up next episode, but Dixon discovering the truth because she knew ASL and could see what was being said was an excellent predicament to put her in. The guilt over this, even if she did the right thing, will probably be weighing on her off-screen. And I’d be so curious to see what it did/does to her relationship with her son given his relationship with the family at the core of this case. Hopefully they dig into that, a bit, next season.
NEXT LEVEL CHEF: I’m so happy for Gabi and Christina! And it’ll be something to have all of the mentors with a contestant in the finale. Should be an interesting battle for the win next week.
GHOSTS: I think this may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m actually okay with Isaac and Nigel not tying the knot. They were lovely! I think couples can (and should) be allowed to be happy on TV shows. But they have forever to figure things out and it didn’t feel like the wedding—or marriage—was the right move this second.
I’m intrigued by Isaac being dragged into the dirt. Obviously, we know he won’t be gone forever. But how long will he be stuck and lost? What will it do to him? And how will he be saved?
(And Pete starting to disappear?! Brilliant to have restrictions on the power, because otherwise, yeah, at some point he might want to actually leave the property forever.)
LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME: I simultaneously want the next episode immediately and also don’t want this season to ever end.
A lot of this episode felt like pieces officially slotting into place (Joe working with Redcoat/Julian Emery) and also setting the stage for the final arc (Elliot coming home). But I really enjoyed it, and, again, just want to see what comes next ASAP.
The thing I want to focus on, primarily, is the interrogation scene between Elliot and Angus. It’s not an easy scene, literally or figuratively. It’s two actors, with very little physical movement, and it was over four minutes of them just talking. The show trusted us to stay engaged despite the lack of obvious flash…and, my God, it was compelling and brilliant. Christopher Meloni and Stephen Lang were captivating, both in the more obvious moments (Elliot getting choked up mentioning Sam’s family, Angus talking about feeling guilty about losing someone to drugs) and the mundane as these two alpha characters finally really met. By nature, “Hank” had to be different from who Elliot really is, and I wish there was more time for them to actually interact in their true personas. But, man, that interrogation scene was a gift; if that’s all we get, I’ll be grateful.
(That being said, uh, maybe get rid of all pillows in your general area, Angus, because that was a very pointed threat from Julian.)
A few other thoughts…
- When Joey came to the bar to talk with Randall and threatened the family?! Oh. My. God. (And, yes, that’s the point where I wrote a literal “?!” in my handwritten notes. It was so alarming it was the only proper punctuation of my entire initial notes about the hour!) What chutzpah. Joey, WTF. (I also don’t want to know what he did to get the money to buy back the baseball.)
- PRODIGAL SON was a show that was very dear to my heart, and I cannot tell you how much joy I have over Tom Payne being on ORGANIZED CRIME now. Is it going to hurt? Almost certainly. He’s tied to Joe Jr. and he’s, in theory, the final Big Bad of the year…there’s almost no way there isn’t major pain to come. But how delightful to see him here, in this world, with these actors.
- I loved the small moment when Reyes checked in on Naz after the loss of Sam. Unfortunately, OCCB is used to losing people, but she wasn’t.
- (Should someone check in on Reyes and Jet and how they’re handling this loss/if they’re falling back on old patterns, or…)
- Literally laughed out loud when the name Krychek came up. (I do not care if it was an intentional X-FILES homage or not. I’m taking it.)
- Eli. This news. Is this the kind of news where you’re happy and everyone else is going to be like, “…uh” or is this actually good news? (I’m worried it’s the former.)
- It almost didn’t work—through no fault of his own—but the Morse code message via flickering lights from Elliot to the team was so freaking smart. Glad Vargas was able to make it up by decoding it later.
- Randall filling in Elliot over pizza? Love it. Might have driven Elliot a little crazy, but given what both of them have been up to over the past few episodes, they’re going to have a lot to really talk about.
- (And, yes, I missed Bell.)
