LAW & ORDER: Mariska Hargitay, Elizabeth Marvel, and Ryan Eggold to Guest Star in Season 24
August 26, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT star Hargitay will cross over as Olivia Benson for an episode airing in October. This marks Hargitay’s third appearance on the mothership since the series was revived in 2022. (She previously was on the show as then-Detective Benson three times during L&O’s original run.)
“She’s a really integral part of the episode,” LAW & ORDER showrunner Rick Eid tells Give Me My Remote. “And she has scenes with Hugh Dancy [who plays ADA Nolan Price], with Tony Goldwyn [who plays DA Nicholas Baxter], with Maura Tierney [who joins the show as Lt. Jessica Brady]…she has meaningful scenes with those three. They’re pretty intense, and there’s a lot of conflict going on.”
Joining Hargitay in that episode is Marvel, who has played attorney Rita Calhoun on SVU in 14 appearances since 2012. (Marvel last appeared on SVU in 2021; she previously appeared on L&O as Defense Attorney Grubman during the show’s first run.)
Eid, who worked with Marvel for a couple of episodes during his tenure as SVU’s season 18 showrunner, notes it was actually Olivia’s presence in the hour that prompted the series to bring over Rita to LAW & ORDER for the first time. “[Hargitay]’s got a huge role in episode 2, and [Benson]’s got a relationship with the defendant,” Eid previews. “We were thinking about casting the attorney, and given the facts of the case—and what’s really going on in the case—we thought that character that Elizabeth plays would be perfect, especially given that she’s got a pre-existing relationship with Benson. It just felt like a natural thing to do, so we’re excited about that.”
In a separate October episode, NEW AMSTERDAM vet Eggold will guest star as the brother of Reid Scott’s Det. Vincent Riley.
Eggold’s character has “one foot in the criminal world,” Eid teases. “His brother ends up being involved in the case [they’re investigating], and we ultimately need his help to solve the case.”
But, naturally, the family reunion isn’t exactly smooth: “The problem is he’s a complicated guy, and he has a complicated relationship with his brother.”
The drama—which is set to have a 22-episode season (after a strike-shortened season 23), matching the episode order for the ONE CHICAGO trio and SVU—also stars Odelya Halevi and Mehcad Brooks.
