NAME THAT TUNE, THE 1% CLUB, and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET

NAME THAT TUNE: L-R: Contestants Gavriella and Marcus in the in the “No Collaborating Here” episode of Name That Tune airing Monday, August 26 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Lorraine O’Sullivan/FOX. ©2023 FOX Media LLC.

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

NAME THAT TUNE: Well, Mela and Zach were playing bid a note chicken and it didn’t quite work out for either of them. Mela struggled in the final round, but it’s bonkers that even an okay final round and a decent head-to-head gameplay can net you over $50,000.

Meanwhile, Gavriella had one of the best first rounds we’ve seen in a while. Wow, wow, wow. I’m kind of surprised she didn’t get it all, but she did incredible.

THE 1% CLUB: QUESTION MARK?! Okay, yeah, that was a brilliant final question and answer. (And the disappointment from the crowd before they realized what was going on was also hilarious.)  Wow, wow, wow. Well deserving of the $99,000.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET:

“Night of the Dead Living”: So, fun story: I started watching the season via screeners from Peacock. I knew there were some things out of order, but to avoid spoiling myself, I didn’t read too deeply about it. Realized about halfway through the season they had the episodes in air order versus intended order, so I just stuck with it and watched the “finale” as it aired. (A belated oy to that scheduling decision.)

It was really jarring to watch the flashbacks—and bittersweet to see their hope about catching a break on Adena’s case, knowing where it would ultimately lead. (Also, poor Chris, being fine and sweet. He didn’t know how his life was about to turn upside down.)

Seeing the squad with the baby who they found left in a cage was so sweet…it’s bittersweet it belonged to a woman who worked there who couldn’t get childcare. (And it’s also insane to think there were no cell phones, so they couldn’t reach the social worker ASAP to explain the misunderstanding.)

But power being out was a fun trope to see them work through. Munch got dumped in the dark! (And had only been divorced twice.) Santa fell from the ceiling! Everyone got sprayed with a hose at the end to cool off. A really fascinating—and good—episode, but a weird one to intentionally disrupt the entire timeline for.

“See No Evil”: Okay, I saw the assisted suicide coming, but I didn’t see everyone actually helping Felton’s friend cover it up. (Also: They have to wait a month for gunshot residue testing!!) I’m so curious if this is done-done or if this comes back in a big way to bite all of them in the butt.

I also love the trope of all of the cops needing to see a therapist. (They do, to be fair, but it’s always an interesting character beat when shows deploy that move.) Munch lamenting losing his partner and having a public meltdown was so funny; he got his point across, he didn’t want to have to suffer through the suspension, too. Also, just a general TV rule, don’t ask out your quasi-therapist, even if they’re only there for a brief time. (I honestly can’t believe it wasn’t Munch to try that here.)

Frank and Giardello not agreeing on whether a murder was an officer-involved shooting…ouch. Again, no spoilers, but I’m guessing this will absolutely be back in a big way/potentially the big case of season 2. I both can’t wait and absolutely dread seeing these two men face off against each other.
