About Last Night…MASTERCHEF: GENERATIONS, BIG BROTHER, CLAIM TO FAME, and More

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE: Laughed out loud at Ron Funches and his BREAKING BAD answer. (IYKYK.) But I felt bad they got the sports thing wrong with the letters because I had no clue, too. Polo didn’t make sense, but golf never crossed my mind.
Meanwhile, Danny Pudi and Gillian Jacobs are adorable. And I’m very, very, very glad they played it smart and didn’t gamble
MASTERCHEF: GENERATIONS: The tag-team challenge remains a NIGHTMARE. It’s incredible there isn’t more mayhem or total severing of (professional) relationships.
Rebecka glaring because of getting the disadvantage…I mean, I get it, but come on. And while two of the three people with the dessert roadblock ended up being in the bottom 3, neither went home. This is still a competition and a game; everyone is doing the best they can.
BIG BROTHER: Well, we’re officially in mess territory—and it feels like we’ve reached a real turning point of the season.
Tucker has been chaotic and extremely loyal to some people, but he’s also expected they would listen to him and follow his lead. When they don’t, it becomes a situation and he gets even more of a wild card.
To some degree, he’s correct: He gave T’Kor an out to let him be a pawn. He gave her $5000. He asked her to put someone not in their alliance up. On paper, it’s fair.
But…it’s not his HOH week. And that’s been the problem all along. He wants to have the final say, whether it helps the HOHs game or not.
Now, is T’Kor playing smart? That’s a whole other problem and I’d argue she isn’t. Quinn, who led this dumb charge, didn’t want to risk Leah going home for his own selfish reasons. As wildly misguided and problematic as Angela is, she’s the only one thinking smart*: This may be their literal only chance to get Tucker out. Instead, they’re protecting…Leah? You don’t need Tucker to keep the numbers in the house and his exit gives everyone else a real chance to win.
If Tucker doesn’t win the AI Arena, does he actually get evicted? Or will they back him, despite it being a bad move for their long-term game? And if he stays in the house, will he continue in his alliances? I truly have no clue which way it’s going to swing.
(Oh, and the Mattrix seems like Hell. I would rather be trapped in a literal mattress for 24 hours.)
*A sentence I literally never expected to write this season.
AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: Delighted but shocked that Learnmore Jonasi made it through. I’m bummed Sam Huang didn’t make it through, though, because he would have made my ideal top 3. Alas.
CLAIM TO FAME: An absolutely insane finale. INSANE.
First of all, WHY DO THESE MEN KEEP SPOILING THEIR OWN IDENTITIES?! It happened three times this season, with two of them using key elements of their name and then Adam boasting about his relative’s big songs this close to the final guessing?! He’s so lucky it didn’t matter.
But, also, yikes to Adam’s head injury. Miguel refusing to help him initially and Adam having to do it all himself—which led to that crazy injury—just sucked. I was pretty apathetic about who won, but after that, I was hoping Adam pulled it out. (And, yeah, Adam wasn’t the most team player, but a lot of his actions were because he simply didn’t know things. He made one stupid move—outing Hud helped him—versus intentionally sabotaging people.)
(Okay, but the most chaotic and funniest thing would have been if Adam DID say the wrong name up there. Because I was just waiting for him to say Chet or Clay Adkins, haha.)
HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET:
“Bop Gun”: ROBIN WILLIAMS?! I feel like I knew this, but had definitely wiped it from my brain before this official watch.
Putting aside Williams’ incredible performance for a moment, I appreciated the layers to this episode, as we actually spent time with a grieving family…who were also struggling with the cops acting like it was business as usual for them. The sad fact is it has to be—if every single case destroyed them, they simply wouldn’t be able to function and do the job. But when your loved one is gone, when your entire world has been flipped upside down, seeing them make light of things is fairly gutting.
But, of course, Williams was absolutely stunning in this guest spot. Robert was simultaneously grief-stricken (still wearing the bloody jacket) and in denial (demanding someone watch over his wife and noting she’d hate being naked in the body bag). He was assertive about trying to get her justice, but also absolutely guilt-ridden about what he didn’t do. And, my goodness, I had chills when he asked Tim for the gun, because…well, I didn’t expect it to go well. (I’m glad I was wrong.) Also, I was impressed by the young actors playing the Ellison kids before I even realized Jake Gyllenhaal was the son; I did notice his father had directed the episode, though.
(Also, loved seeing Richard Belzer and Williams together; Williams was in one of my favorite episodes of SVU, so it was extra lovely seeing them share the screen again.)
