Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

BEAT SHAZAM: Andy being so excited for Olivia Rodrigo was very funny. (And he was good at that round!)

Brooke and Theresa struggled in the end, and, yeah, didn’t know the final-final song, which is always a bummer. It felt like an odd portion to try and guess, because that’s absolutely a song I know and I didn’t ping it in that section either. Alas.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: Well, it was a rough episode at points, and it very much seemed like the judges—or at least Simon and Howie—were cranky. I am a bit confused (and more than a little concerned) that it feels like the episode was completely backloaded with the best acts of the night. Is that going to hurt one or more of them?

THE QUIZ WITH BALLS: The Halaufia family was impressive. And basically winning $100,000 based on vibes?! Maybe more impressive than knowing the answer for sure.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET:

“The Last of the Watermen”:  I can’t say I blame Kay: Seeing an old woman with her tongue cut out and stuffed back in her mouth?! That might be enough to send me on a vacation, too. (Also, it being her grandson is a thousand levels of messed up.)

I am glad we finally got to see more of who Kay is and where she came from. (Though, of course, there was still a traumatizing murder to deal with and solve.) Not a shock Melissa Leo was fantastic in this episode—she goes on to be an Oscar winner post-HOMICIDE, after all—but I do hope we get to see more of/from her.

Also:

  • Okay, it’s so strange to see Munch in casual clothes. And see them doing laundry!!
  • Frank’s “Oh no, please” outburst over being partnered with Beau made me laugh out loud.
  • Munch wants no TV in the bar? Boo.

“A Model Citizen”: I thought it was funny that everyone was falling for Emma—hello, Lauren Tom!—and then it turned out her bed was a coffin and it took on a whole other level of weird. Though it is interesting they took Tim down this path since it felt like they might be starting something like this at the end of season 2; there were a lot of changes between seasons, though, and I wasn’t sure if it was a thread that might have been dropped. But, also, guys…probably a red flag.

Wildly impressed and intrigued by the revelation that Frank and Megan were sued for violating the civil rights of the woman Frank intensely interrogated a few episodes earlier. The lit match was an extreme step—whether she was of right mind or not—and while calling it manipulation might be a stretch, as much as I love Frank, it did cross a line. Not surprised the city wanted to settle…I am surprised this prompted Frank to go back into a church.

(Hey, Joe Morton!)

Also, Munch, buddy, you may want to quit, but—spoiler alert—you’re gonna be a cop for a very long time.

“Happy to Be Here”: My actual note from my watch: “Still with coffin girl, Tim???? Buddy, no.” (Sorry to Emma, but…no.)

But, look, it worked. Everything in Tim’s life has been falling apart—even pre-dating Crosetti’s death—and he certainly isn’t the only cop to snap in recent episodes. This was, truly (hopefully), his rock bottom: Pulling a freaking gun on a cashier because he wouldn’t wave off the missing 11 cents could have been career-ending; he’s lucky Frank had his back.

Crosetti’s name still on the board was a brutally beautiful small moment. It’s not something I had really thought about, but that’s acknowledging the loss in a whole other, meaningful way to them.

A lot has changed between seasons 1 and 2/3, so far, but this episode was when it hit me we really have lost our bar scenes. There’s less to be joyful and merry about for everyone right now—and so many people are spiraling for various reasons—but I do miss those big group scenes where they really felt like a team.

(I laughed out loud at the facial measuring, though.)
