MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN and AMERICA'S GOT TALENT

MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN: L-R: Kristin Kreuk and Rossif Sutherland in the series premiere of MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN airing Tuesday, Sept. 24 (8:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2024 Fox Media LLC. CR: Kailey Schwerman/ FOX.

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN: With MATLOCK, I was shocked by the pilot and couldn’t wait to see more. With this? I was genuinely confused by what I had just watched.

First of all, the tone is nothing like what Fox was promoting. There was a BROADCHURCH/GRACEPOINT or THE KILLING vibe from the trailers. Instead—and this is not actually a complaint—it was closer to CASTLE? It wasn’t as funny as CASTLE, but the central relationship was way more relevant and center stage to the entire story than I expected.

But…I also finished the episode wondering what the show was actually about. I’m not kidding when I say I went back and rewatched the trailer and then looked at the second episode’s logline within minutes of watching my screener; it very much felt like the impression pre-air was that the show would be tracking a singular murder in a small town, not murderS in a small town. (Or if there was more than one, they’d be connected to the same case.) I’m curious to watch more, but I’m not quite as interested, in theory, in a “murder of the week” set here. (Because, again, it’s a small town.) We’ll see.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: It’s an absolute shame (and shock) that Sebastián & Sonia didn’t make the Top 5. But it’s undeniable Richard Goodall was the story of the season, so it felt right/fitting he won it all. But what a great season…it was great to see so many different kinds of acts in the finale.
