When CHICAGO P.D.’s season 12 kicked off, things were different in Intelligence: Upton was gone, Burgess (Marina Squerciati ) was away at a conference, and viewers learned Detective Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena) had been with the team for over a month.

Martel and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger)—or Ruzie, as Martel called him, going back to their time together in the academy—worked together as unit worked on a drug bust…with Ruzek having a close call when a gun was pointed at his head. That pushed a button for Martel, who recently lost her partner on the job.

But the new partnership was short-lived. After wrapping up a crime scene, the duo joked about how long they’d have before Voight (Jason Beghe) called them to another case. Martel also got serious, noting she thought she “would never be in the field” again.

“Are we havin’ a moment?” Ruzek teases her—but they’re interrupted by two gunshots.

The duo get into emergency mode, get out of the car with their guns drawn…and Martel is shot and killed, much to Ruzek’s horror.

Did you see those final moments coming?
