As CHICAGO FIRE leans into its “haunted” theme this season, one character will see that resonate in an unexpected way.

“We have a really fun Cruz story that’s about a ghost from his past coming back to haunt him,” CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Andrea Newman teases to Give Me My Remote of Joe Miñoso’s character.

And while the storyline will throw Cruz, it will be familiar territory for long-time fans. “This is the wonderful thing about having 12 years, 12 seasons behind us,” Newman points out. “For loyal viewers, they will know where this story and where this person comes from very well. And I think their stomachs will drop.”

The showrunner also teases that she expects a number of characters to surprise the CHICAGO FIRE audience this season. “I think Carver is a big surprise at the beginning,” Newman says. “Ritter has some changes coming that will be surprising. And then this Cruz story, where it takes Cruz, will be a big surprise, as well.”

“And, honestly, the character of Pascal is just one surprise after the next because he’s such a mysterious figure,” she continues. “Peeling back the layers on him is going to be a lot of fun in terms of surprises and turns, and who this guy really is.”

The good news? The series will have its normal 22-episode season to dig into characters even further.

“We’re very excited…it gives us the opportunity, really, to play more with all the characters,” Newman says. “Having such a big cast, you don’t always get to explore everybody when it’s a shortened season. So we didn’t get to do as much last year as we’d like. So this year, I’d say we get to delve deeper into the characters. We get to do more arcs. We’ll do more mini-crossovers. The opportunity for a crossover exists in the longer season, so we get to talk about that.”

“What’s great is last year [when] we started [production], it was already winter in Chicago,” she continues. “So we didn’t get to do any of the fun boat stuff and water stuff. So this year, we get to have some fun with that. And we do, pretty much right off the bat—we have some fun outside action.”
