CHICAGO P.D. Post-Mortem: Patrick John Flueger on the ‘Blood Bleeds Blue’ Fallout and (Eventual) Return of Cook
October 2, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, October 2 episode of CHICAGO P.D.]
After losing CHICAGO P.D.’s Detective Emily Martel, Intelligence had to buckle down and find her killer.
Unfortunately, it was a situation of wrong place/wrong time for the cops: They inadvertently found themselves in the middle of a domestic dispute: Roy Darrow shot his former wife and kidnapped their toddler son—and was on a quest to find his other son, Nate, too.
Intelligence and Roy both tried to find the young man, but Nate had a plan of his own—he broke into his uncle’s home to steal a gun to protect himself and his brother. Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) found Nate and was able to talk the young man down; he also was able to get Nate to share where his father was going to be.
Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger)—who had been desperately trying to keep it together after watching Martel, his old friend, get killed—headed there with patrol officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner). After a brutal struggle—which included Cook hanging off of Roy’s car before the car crash, and then Roy faking his own death in an attempt to get Ruzek to let his guard down—Ruzek was able to safely recover the kidnapped toddler and evacuate the area before Roy’s car exploded, with Roy still inside.
Afterward, Ruzek was visibly shaken, with the events of the day clearly overwhelming him…and Cook joined him to offer support for her fellow officer.
Though Ruzek had that moment of emotional vulnerability at the end of “Blood Bleeds Blue,” the fallout will be more subtle in the weeks ahead.
“Every episode kind of has a lead [actor]…and I haven’t had one [where Ruzek is the focus] since then,” Flueger tells Give Me My Remote. “But if I’m just talking for myself, I think that episode 7 or 8 is where I’m finally kind of letting [go of the trauma], trying to let him have more fun again. [I] tried to try to hold on to it. Not that he’s, like, sad and morose all of the time, but just that [he was] affected.”
The impact of this case will also play out in another way: The return of Cook, who will (eventually) become an Intelligence team member.
“When she comes in, you don’t see the scene, but I think it’s alluded to—I certainly played it and had it in my head—that [Ruzek] told Voight about this gal and about how good she is at her job, and how devoted she is,” Flueger shares of how this hour may have bonded the two new teammates. “The next episode that you see her [in] is episode 5, and apparently her and Ben Aguilar are just phenomenal, fantastic in it. I’ve seen some of the scenes.”
“The whole episode, they were just pissing rain on us the whole time—excuse my language,” he continues with a laugh. “But it was a rain episode…it looks gorgeous. Chad Saxton, who’s our directing producer, he directed it, and all of the shots I’ve seen are, like, pretty darn cinematic. NBC should be so lucky, that’s what I’m going to say about it. And apparently she’s fantastic in it. [But] I think he’s told Voight about her and that, ‘Hey, we need team members and we’d be lucky to have her.’”
