LAW & ORDER kicks off its 24th season (on Thursday, October 3) with a case that hits close to home for ADA Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi): A Brooklyn prosecutor—who was Maroun’s friend and dealing with a number of high-profile cases—is killed.

“Knowing her personally, this really drives [Maroun] to take center stage in both trial and investigating and taking really desperate measures to get an eyewitness to testify,” Halevi tells Give Me My Remote

There’s also an echo of Maroun’s own tragic history at play for the lawyer, too. “This really reminds her of sister—who was murdered—and the guilt of not being able to be there for her sister and not being able to save her,” Halevi says. “And so she’s really determined to win this case, against all odds.”

Complicating matters is the new boss, Lieutenant Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney), whose arrival at the precinct syncs up with this tricky case.

“[Maroun]’s sort of taken aback by Brady,” Halevi previews. “[Maroun] bursts into the precinct to see [Reid Scott’s] Riley and [Mehcad Brooks’] Shaw and let them know she knew the victim and let them know she’s there for anything they need. And all of a sudden she’s presented with this new [lieutenant].”

“There’s always a tense relationship between the precinct and the prosecutors,” she continues. “[Maroun] doesn’t know that person, she doesn’t know if she can trust that person. There’s going to be more information revealed about [Brady later, but] what we know right now is that she is a veteran [lieutenant]. She is very thorough. She sees what people don’t see. She expects people to do the job, and she makes people take accountability for their actions. So, yeah, it’s going to be an interesting dynamic. We’re all about to be surprised and find out more.”

LAW & ORDER, Season Premiere, Thursday, October 3, 8/7c, NBC
