About Last Night…LAW & ORDER, LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, GREY’S ANATOMY, and More

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!
LAW & ORDER: It’s still early, but Maura Tierney feels like a good addition to the series. I don’t need my boss characters to be in the field or conducting investigations, but it could be interesting to see what Brady brings to the table, literally and figuratively.
I am surprised Baxter was so okay with dropping the murder case, though. To be clear: They shouldn’t do anything that would cross a line, but you’d think a Brooklyn prosecutor being killed would be big news and someone would need to “pay,” publicly.
But, wow, Odelya Halevi and Hugh Dancy were incredible in that final scene. I’m glad Price was able to get through to Maroun—and how lovely that she was able to break down and have that moment of comfort from him. (That being said, it’s also wild we have largely gotten more consistent/better personal content from the mothership than SVU in 2024.)
(I am confused by why Dixon would leave like that, but at least it was less vague than Cosgrove’s farewell?)
[For more on the episode, here’s what Halevi shared.]
9-1-1: Okay, first of all, where’s my bee-nado?! I can’t believe it may be over already.
That being said, everyone’s reaction when they found out Athena was on the plane? Absolutely perfect. And of course they saved the day from afar. It was ridiculous. I would not change a thing.
But, of course, the highlight was Bobby realizing what he missed while his phone was off on set and that Athena was actually on the in-distress plane. (“She’s flying it.” “Of course she is.”)
CRIME SCENE KITCHEN: It’s very easy to judge from home, I know, but wow, that first bake was a mess? People seemed so unprepared and out of their element. I’m curious to see if their second episode is better or if this group is really just not right for this show.
LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: The good news is the episode was better than anything from last season. The weird thing was it really didn’t feel like a season premiere. We kept being told how big this case was, how it was the biggest thing of the year…but we just watched an entire season of the Maddie arc. That wasn’t a small, personal case; it was supposed to be huge. So the sentiment that this was somehow bigger felt flat.
The best scene of the episode was the squad at the gun range, though. It was nice to see the whole team together and having fun, even if it was also technically a work field trip. And, of course, I laughed out loud at Fin revealing his gun’s name and Bruno not only knowing Fin named it after his ex-wife, but that whole bit of banter.
A couple of other thoughts:
- I’m really glad we didn’t see Silva’s first day (even if it might have been a little amusing). We’ve seen so many detectives start in this squad in the past few years that this gave it a genuinely different beat/feel. She’s fitting in well so far, too.
- Also feels like a positive sign we got Carisi getting to be an actual lawyer in this episode; it’s a thing the show has mightily struggled with since they switched up his job back in season 21, so fingers crossed it sticks. With five series regulars in the cop world—plus Curry*—there’s certainly less of a need for him to be ADACop, outside of really extenuating circumstances.
- *I do wish Aimé Donna Kelly had been made a regular, too, but I get the reality that you can’t have more than one captain/lieutenant/sergeant in the squad. I hope we get a good amount of her this season, though. (I actually really enjoyed the work pairings this week, too.)
- Olivia seemed less frantic and more grounded in the premiere than we’ve seen her all year. I’m truly not sure if we’re supposed to believe she’s been taking therapy more seriously/trying to heal herself and not throw herself entirely into work or if we’re supposed to forget about last season’s arc.
- I know this was absolutely unintentional, casting-wise, but Shelli kept reminding me of ORGANIZED CRIME’s Jet. (I miss OC.)
[For more on the reveal about Silva’s backstory, here’s what Juliana Aidén Martinez shared.]
DOCTOR ODYSSEY: A sentence I did not think I’d write in ALN (or maybe ever): I really thought there’d just be the one threesome on the 9 PM hour on network TV. But DOCTOR ODYSSEY wasn’t going to let SVU outdo them, it seems! (This is a joke, of course they didn’t know, but absolutely hilarious that particular device was used on NBC and ABC in the same time slot on the same night.)
I still wish the show was more fun, but I did enjoy episode 2 more than the pilot. And we got way more of Shania Twain acting than I expected, which was lovely.
FOUND: I mean this nicely: I am stressed.
Two of the things that were most engaging in season 1 were the M&A family and the (very twisted) Sir and Gabi dynamic. With Gabi having to come clean to everyone and Sir on the run, season 2 inherently had to blow both of those things up.
Most important to me is probably the M&A dynamic, which I suspect will have to outlive the Sir and Gabi mess. I don’t blame those who feel super betrayed by Gabi in the premiere; I can understand those who showed her more grace. (I would be in the former camp, I suspect.) And with Lacey still out there, I just don’t know how they even start to really heal until that’s resolved.
As for Sir and Gabi, it felt like the show handled it well in the premiere. You can’t have them physically together all the time if he’s supposed to be on the run until ???, but they’re never going to be far from each other’s minds. Cryptic messages, phone calls, and visions make sense.
(But also Gabi is going to need a spa week whenever Lacey is found and Sir is caught. If I’m stressed, she must be feeling a billion times worse.)
[For more on the premiere, here’s what FOUND creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll shared.]
GREY’S ANATOMY: Wow, it made my heart nostalgic and happy to be reminded how good Meredith and Bailey are working together. Their dynamic with Catherine even made me like Catherine for the first time in a while, too.
It also hit me while I was watching how surreal it is that Meredith is basically back. She just left! It didn’t stick! (This is not a complaint, to be clear.)
A couple of other thoughts:
- Kwan and his former fiancee…absolutely brutal, for both of them. The closure was nice, but how confusing to know the person in front of you was a key part of your life, that they have memories of you, and you have nothing. And for Kwan, to carry the burden of that history, that guilt, basically alone? He got absolution, but I don’t blame him for being in his feelings in the aftermath.
- Oh my God, the poor terminally ill kid. It was gutting he was thriving in his dark humor…until it became very real he only had a few months to live and he instantly became a kid again.
- The men playing golf made me nostalgic for Richard doing ridiculous outdoor activities with other doctors (remember that early-era fishing trip? RIP to like half of those characters)…and then Derek was mentioned. I love that the show doesn’t ignore its own history.
- It made me laugh out loud that Teddy got denied her return as chief and got it back in one episode. Her demotion didn’t last long.
