Romance is all around on CHICAGO MED…but things aren’t exactly going to be smooth for a lot of the couples.

Though tension has been high between Ripley (Luke Mitchell) and Asher (Jessy Schram)—after she seemingly played a role in turning over his friends to the cops—another couple will find themselves facing unexpected turbulence on the Wednesday, October 9 episode, “Trust Fall.”

“Maggie and Loren are still going strong,” CHICAGO MED showrunner Allen MacDonald teases to Give Me My Remote of Marlyne Barrett and Henderson Wade’s characters. “They have a really fun story in episode 3…I can tell you, Marisa, between you and me and your readers: Loren can see that there’s some chemistry between [Darren Barnet’s] Dr. Frost and Maggie. And it’s not necessarily romantic tension, but it’s more chemistry than he likes to see. There’s some fun, sparks, and fireworks in episode 3.”

As for the other new doctor on the block, Lenox (Sarah Ramos), she’s already had tension with her co-ED leader, Archer (Steven Weber). But is romance in the cards for them?

“Never say never,” MacDonald says. “I would say that there is explosiveness between them, [but] I don’t feel that it’s romantic—at least at this point.”

The show is, however, moving away from exploring Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) complicated caretaking relationship with her ex-husband, Bert (Greg Alan Williams). “One of the things I thought that the previous showrunners, Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider, did so beautifully last season, was the Goodwin story, and watching Bert descend into Alzheimer’s,” MacDonald says. “That’s something that I experienced in my own family—and am currently experiencing—and I just thought that they got everything right. It was beautifully done and very moving.”

“I would say, though, that that story was told so successfully that I think it’s a complete story,” he continues. “We don’t have a lot of plans [going] forward, to be honest, to stay on the Bert storyline. I’m not saying we won’t see Bert at some point, because that’s still part of Goodwin’s world, but that she is, for better or worse, having to get on with her life. And now that she’s realized that Bert is beyond the point that she will be able to effectively communicate with him, she’s able to focus more on her relationship with [John Earl Jelks’] Dennis—which, of course, you’ll be shocked to know they have some bumps in the road.”

As for what kind of trouble is facing Goodwin and Dennis, the showrunner was coy. “There are internal and external bumps in the road between them, in their relationship, as the season progresses,” he teases. “But there are some very external bumps that Goodwin will have to confront in the first 10 episodes.”
