FBI Most Wanted Nina family

“Best Laid Plans” – When a retired FBI agent is tortured and killed while working a security job, Scola and Nina (FBI: MOST WANTED) go undercover as a married couple deep in the diamond game as the team tries to find out who is responsible. During the course of his and Nina’s dangerous assignment, Scola is plagued by the possibility that their son Doug could end up parentless, on FBI, Tuesday, April 16 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs). FBI’s Scola (John Boyd) and FBI: MOST WANTED’s Nina (Shantel VanSanten) have settled into domestic bliss with their son Dougie—but things are going to get a little messy for the duo.

“The conflict and the complication there is we meet Nina’s family,” MOST WANTED showrunner David Hudgins tells Give Me My Remote. “We meet her sister…[plus,] her father is very traditional and doesn’t understand why they haven’t put a ring on it. And it raises lots of issues that she has with her family.”

The familial drama first pops up in FBI: MOST WANTED’s third episode of season 6. “We cast John J. Finn, who was on COLD CASE, and he’s just [playing] this crusty old dude from Houston, and set in his ways,” Hudgins teases. “When you think about Nina and what she’s done, she’s just as formidable as he is—but she’s just made different life choices.”

“We peel back a lot of the backstory,” he continues. “Nina’s mother was an addict and died when she was young. Nina and her sister were essentially raised by their father. And as soon as she could, Nina got out; she graduated at 18 and left her sister behind with her dad, who was not a bad guy, but just limited…so there’s a lot of emotional baggage from the past that gets unpacked when they show up in town.”

For Boyd, who got to guest star in the episode, “it was fun to get to go over [on MOST WANTED] and help tell Shantel’s story—what a partner does when family comes into town, to try to help mitigate conflict,” the actor shares. “There’s so much bubbling onto the surface from history. But it was fun to find those moments with Scola and Nina—How you divert the conflict and keep things moving? [The mindset of,] ‘Let’s just get the food on the table and eat the meal and enjoy each other for a few minutes.’ But it’s always fun to get to go over and work with them.”

Things do get shaky between Scola and Nina’s family, too, though. “Scola is a bit of a blue blood and Nina is not—and her father is definitely not,” Hudgins teases. “So there’s conflict built in there between the father and Scola. If [Dougie]’s going to have a hyphenated last name, the dad’s like, ‘How’s that going to fit on his football jersey?’ Scola is like, ‘Well, who said he was going to play football?’ It’s that kind of thing. So Scola is very much a part of that story.”

And, as Hudgins alluded, the story will continue on: “We pick it up again later, and it’s going to continue throughout the season.”
