FBI: Mike Weiss and John Boyd Tease a Mysterious Case and a ‘Really Tough Goodbye’ in the Season 7 Premiere
October 14, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
FBI is entering its upcoming seventh season with a little bit of freedom: The series was granted a three-season pickup in the spring, bringing its run to at least season 9.
“It’s great—it means we can do our black-and-white mime episode, and we’re not worried about ratings,” new FBI showrunner Mike Weiss deadpans to Give Me My Remote, as series star John Boyd (who plays Scola) laughs.
Weiss—who previously worked on Wolf Entertainment’s NBC series CHICAGO P.D.—joined the CBS drama as showrunner in May, stepping in after longtime showrunner Rick Eid’s departure.
Turning serious, Weiss acknowledges having those guaranteed seasons “really helps” as he navigates his first year in charge of the show.
“While we don’t spend a lot of time planning how we would set up something in season 8 or 9, it does help to feel like you’ve got the room to think more globally about the show and the characters,” he says. “We love them. All the writers on the staff are all-in on telling awesome stories that are worthy of a three-season pickup.”
And things kick off with a bang on the season 7 premiere (on Tuesday, October 15 at 8/7c)—literally and figuratively.
“There’s different types of FBI episodes, and we love the idea of starting with a slightly mysterious opening,” Weiss previews. “A plumber is driving to work and his car explodes, and it doesn’t quite make sense. It looks like a high-end assassination of a blue-collar outer borough plumber.”
“As we dig into it, we discover that this plumber is not at all what he appears to be,” he continues. “He has a very interesting backstory that stretches all the way back to the world of international CIA-level espionage. And as we unpack what’s really going on in this really increasingly dangerous situation in New York, we butt heads with the CIA agent who was a big part of our victims’ life way back when.”
As the agents are grappling with that, Tiffany (Katherine Renee Kane, whose exit was announced over the summer) tries to figure out what the right move for herself is after getting justice for fallen colleague Hobbs (Roshawn Franklin) last season.
“It’s a great episode; Mike did just a beautiful job playing with the storytelling,” Boyd shares. “It’s really captivating and it’s really emotional. It’s really tough. You know, it’s been a long, long partnership, and it’s really tough; a really tough goodbye. But there’s a goodbye scene with Scola and Tiff that I’m really proud of, and I’m so excited for people to see it. [The episode has] Scola in a hospital bed and losing a partner. [For] the fans, it’s going to be really emotional.”
Adds Weiss, “We wanted to write something that would really push the partnership story forward and have it end with a crescendo, instead of just, ‘Well, that was our last case together. Nice working with you.’ We went with something way more intense. And John and Katherine are so, so good in these scenes together. I’m incredibly proud of how that storyline turned out.”
