FBI: John Boyd and Mike Weiss Tease Scola’s Quest for a New Partner

FBI’s Scola (John Boyd) is officially without a partner…which means he has to try and get used to a new one on the Tuesday, October 22 episode, “Trusted.”

“I love this,” Boyd tells Give Me My Remote. “One of the first things [showrunner] Mike [Weiss] said when he jumped on board was, ‘We’re gonna do this like Goldilocks and check out [different dynamics].’ I thought it was so interesting because anytime there’s an opening, it’s just kind of like ‘insert new person here.’ So Scola having this struggle to find a new partner was just so fun to play and getting to show a different side of him.”

“And is he not ready for a new partner? He misses [Tiff]—he’s too prickly,” he continues. “And he’s going through this [process like], ‘Is it me?’ It’s like going through speed dating. The rest of the team [is] teasing him about this. It was really fun to play.”

“I think we got some really fun actors to get in there and test different aspects of Scola’s psychological makeup,” Weiss adds.

“Yes, absolutely it was,” Boyd replies. “It was really fun to get to play that side of him, for sure.”

As Scola goes on his quest to find the right partner, “we’re gonna [think] this gal’s too something, this guy is obviously too that,” Weiss says. “And eventually we find someone who falls into our lap, story-wise, who seems like an obvious addition to the team, who Scola can work with in a new way.”

The new character, played by Lisette Olivera, “is gonna be a younger agent,” Weiss previews. “She’s gonna be someone who comes from the Behavioral Analysis Unit, so she brings kind of a more psychological, intellectual approach to field work, and hasn’t been in the field that much. And all of a sudden, Scola finds himself in a little bit of a mentor-protégé relationship with a younger, obviously brilliant, agent.”

Though Weiss was coy about when viewers would meet Scola’s new partner, he did tease “we’re gonna meet her early on in the season.”

Scola’s rotating partnerships also mean the show will be delaying its unofficial partner swap episodes. “We definitely play with things a little bit deeper into the season in terms of putting people in rooms,” Weiss shares. “We think that [is] creating interesting pairings…but I think Scola’s search for the new partner kind of makes it so that you just want to see Maggie and OA as a stable partnership, in opposition to Scola trying to figure this out. So that’s kind of how it plays.”

One thing that won’t be burdening Scola in a major way? His season-opening injury. 

“He’s carrying it,” Boyd notes. “He’s in the next [episode]. He’s still carrying it a little bit, physically. He’s back, but, yeah, surgery goes well. He’s back out in the field in the next episode, but he’s still feeling a little bit of the wear and tear of that one and losing a partner. He’s not exactly ready for the next person that’s sitting next to him.”

“I mean, Scola’s in his late 20s, he can’t just bounce back the way he used to,” Weiss jokes.

And in the episode, “he’s definitely undercover,” Boyd teases. Adds Weiss: “But it’s a nice walking pace, that sequence.”
