Sam (Rose McIver) gets a visit from her father (played by Dean Norris) and his girlfriend (played by Melinda McGraw) on the Thursday, October 24 episode of GHOSTS.

“Well, we haven’t seen him—and this is now season 4,” GHOSTS co-showrunner Joe Wiseman points out to Give Me My Remote. “So, unsurprisingly, they don’t have a tight relationship. And I think that’s something that Sam and he are then going to leave this episode deciding to work on, to try to be in each other’s lives a little bit more.”

“Part of the reason I think Sam is such a good conduit for the ghosts is because she’s a little thirsty and she really wants family,” co-showrunner Joe Port adds. “So that’s why she’s so attached to this found family of the ghosts. But the ghosts are people who have watched generations and generations of other people interacting and struggling and dealing with weird dynamics and family problems; they’re going to be a big help to Sam and in helping her deal with her dad.”

Norris is currently a regular on LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, but the showrunners are hoping they’ll be able to bring him back to the GHOSTS world at some point.

“He’s the greatest, it was so fun to have him in an episode,” Wiseman says. “Obviously, we’re huge fans of all of his work, and, look, we would love to have him back. There [are] practical scheduling obstacles, but we will tackle those as we come. But we would absolutely love to have him come back as Sam’s dad someday.”

It was actually another show of Norris’ that helped lead him to the GHOSTS world: Wiseman and his daughter were binging BREAKING BAD (which the actor co-starred in for five seasons) while the writers were contemplating who should play Sam’s father. “I was talking to her about it, she’s like, ‘What about [Norris’ character] Hank?’” Wiseman recalls. “And I’m like, ‘That’s a great idea.’”

Wiseman’s daughter was shocked when her pitch actually came to fruition—and a little nervous. “She felt a lot of pressure,” Port notes. “She was like, ‘How’s he doing?’…[But] I thought it was a great idea. I was immediately like, ‘Yeah, that’s a good idea.’ She’s got a great eye.”

GHOSTS, Thursdays, 8:30/7:30c, CBS
