Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

LAW & ORDER: Absolutely wild that Baxter didn’t recuse himself/find a way to get the case moved elsewhere given his conflict of interest with the school. Mess, mess, mess. (I’m glad Nolan pointed out the conflict, but still.)

I’m also really glad the show is diving a bit more into the personal for these characters, too. The Baxter tie to the case, of course, gave us a little more of his history, but the hour especially led to insight into Brady’s relationship with her kids. (Fingers crossed her younger son doesn’t end up as part of one of their cases soon.) These tidbits are so vital in helping us connect to characters; if we’re going to invest our time in them, no character should just be about work.

9-1-1: Okay, the guts falling out was insane and wildly gross. Noooooo thank you. And twice in a week on network TV? Please don’t have another show replicate this and make it an official trend. [Though, a note: Thank you to my brilliant friend for pointing out this really happened early in the summer; the 9-1-1 and CHICAGO FIRE writers’ rooms got on this fast.] (And, hey, real-life married couple Jennifer Finnigan and Jonathan Silverman playing the feuding maybe-exes.)

The Buck-Abby-Tommy reveal was absolutely wild. Also, how did that not come up before they reached six months together?!?! Similarly, the break-up felt a little forced. They might not have been destined for happily ever after, but the split didn’t feel wildly earned and like a really easy way out.

(While there are merits to a conversation about coming out in a pre- and post-GLEE world, absolutely hilarious the point was being made on another Ryan Murphy show.)

Also: Trying to be happy for Maddie and Chim, but very worried for them. Please let this pregnancy be smooth, TPTB.

GHOSTS: Okay, utilizing Michael Jackson as a fake name was brilliant. And, hey, we got a game of ghost telephone thanks to Trevor trying to keep his lies alive through Jay.

But, man, maybe it’s this week, maybe it’s this episode, but the fact that Trevor’s legacy lives on, despite his short life and it being so many years later, made me cry. He’ll never get his real life back, but the impact he made continues to change the way his section of the world works. What a gift.

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: A really solid, even if quasi-predictable, episode. (I was thinking perhaps Chris got attacked after he attacked his girlfriend, Ellie, but…the tree/knife thing was a choice by Chris. Also: Yikes.) Probably the second-best episode of the season for me, as of now.

The highlight for me was the dynamic between Bruno and Silva. They’re obviously both experienced, have different ways of doing things, but the sparks really worked. (Not saying I expect it to go romantic, to be clear, but right now it feels like they have the kind of banter we’ve also seen in underrated—and underutilized—duo Bruno/Fin.) I really hope the show continues to actually utilize its (finally) deep bench of cop regulars in upcoming episodes. Let us learn more about who works well together! Let us learn more about them, especially as they’re learning about each other. It really works that we’ve learned about Silva via her disclosing things to her new colleagues.

I honestly don’t even know what to say about the Olivia/Ellie scenes, though. Olivia Benson is an absolute badass, a warrior. Are we implying she can now…actually get someone in a coma to react to her voice? Also, there is absolutely no way Ellie’s hand twitching in Olivia’s would be legally admissible. Obviously they got the confession later, but…okay. And, yes, I know Ellie’s mother claimed her daughter twitched for her, too, but…sigh.

(The show has money for “Espresso”?! I know they rarely utilize songs, but…)

MATLOCK: Well, Matlock getting recognized by someone on a dating site won’t end well…

I’m also glad that she’s allowing herself to be a human while she’s working these cases, even if it might quasi-jeopardize her stealth plan. Of course working a case where addiction was a big factor would be a trigger for Matty. But I’m really glad she has her husband to lean on/he’s so willing and able to go along with her on this. (Protect them, please, writers.)

CRIME SCENE KITCHEN: Oh, the sweet and savory initial bake was a smart trick…it’s so easy to get lulled into following a path and miss (or be confused by) clues that contradict each other.

FOUND: Oh, Lacey, girl—taunting Sir?! Oh no.

And I thought that would be the biggest Sir-related jaw-dropper but then Sir CAME TO M&A AND HAD A CASUAL CHAT WITH MARGARET. I freaking mean…what?!?! The tension of that Margaret/Sir scene was intense: He knew he had limited time, her friends could only watch as they tried to get help, and it got messy. So, so messy.

But, man, I loved the Lacey/Gabi/Margaret scene at the end. I know why Margaret is so hurt by Gabi’s deception; I don’t blame her. But these people are family. Even when they’re wounded and kind of hate what the others have done.

ELSBETH: This was fun. Kaya and Elsbeth matching each other’s level of nerdy theorizing was absolutely adorable. And a really smart decision to utilize the different stylistic approach (including the way they transitioned between scenes) for this caper episode.

GREY’S ANATOMY: I hate Amelia rewriting her relationship with Link to Jo. Like, even if they weren’t going to be endgame, that man loved her, and it’s dismissive and diminishing to pretend he didn’t.

And, hey, can we count Simone and Lucas’ accidental moment as an elevator love confession? (I know he didn’t reciprocate until later, but still.)

The Teddy mess was so obvious, but also…just sigh. Owen shouldn’t actually be mad at her, but why do we need this drama? They were already seemingly messy and it felt like a hat on a hat.

Also: WTF with Mika falling asleep behind the wheel. I deeply, deeply, deeply, deeply hope the show isn’t about to do something problematic with her exit.
