When Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) left Firehouse 51 at the end of season 12, he made it clear to Herrmann (David Eigenberg) that he wanted him to be his successor. Instead, when the show returned for season 13, the firehouse had a new boss in Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney)…and Herrmann hadn’t even taken the test to be promoted yet.

“If there were any regrets, [it would] just be that he has to sit back and watch the ship go [on], although he’s on the ship,” Eigenberg tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “He’s secure in that…there’s pretty much nobody that wouldn’t go to bat for somebody else within the confines of the [firehouse].”

As for the new boss, Eigenberg praises Mulroney’s portrayal of Pascal, noting the actor “brings credibility to the job.”

“I think it plays into some of the success of this show: There’s concern and love and care for each other, and a lot of humor on the show,” Eigenberg notes. “And Dermot is very funny, so he slipped right in.”

Eigenberg credits Mulroney’s sense of humor—and gentle mocking of him at times—with helping inform the relationship between Herrmann and Pascal. “That plays a little bit to our relationship on the show,” Eigenberg says. “Also, I couldn’t be happier to go all these years and for the wheels not to fall off the cart…or fall into a malaise. It’s a wonderful thing.”

But with the drama heating up on-screen—Pascal and Severide (Taylor Kinney) are working on a delicate arson case that could have wide-reaching consequences in the department, plus, Caver’s (Jake Lockett) personal issues are spilling into the firehouse—Eigenberg notes his character’s friends are not leaning on Herrmann to help. “Either through my sheer incompetence or my instability, those characters, at this juncture, are not asking for my help or advice,” he jokes. “And they could really use it!”
