About Last Night…CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE, CHICAGO P.D., and More

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
CHICAGO MED: This was a great episode and almost certainly the fall finale I’ll think about the most as we head into a holiday hiatus.
First of all, the Goodwin scenes with Cassidy were absolutely insane, tense, and anxiety-inducing. I wouldn’t have guessed who the stalker was if I had 50 guesses, but in hindsight it made so much sense. But Goodwin doing everything possible to keep herself alive, while her colleagues tried and failed to reach her (but assumed she had gone home), and it feeling like the only real hope she had to get out of it was to somehow change Cassidy’s mind…it was chilling.
And then the final sequence happened.
Archer’s impromptu decision to quit (after realizing he couldn’t handle his demotion) was a double-edged sword: Of course I don’t want him gone, but I also really wanted him to go to Goodwin and realize what was going on. And his decision to slip his letter under her door felt like another nail in Goodwin’s coffin, but thank goodness she was alert enough to use it as a distraction to attack Cassidy and briefly get away. I’ve watched the seconds when she frantically tried to reach Archer, and he obliviously tried to leave on the elevator, only to spot his bloodied boss as the doors were closing…countless times. It’s such a well done reveal, with fantastic acting from S. Epatha Merkerson and Steven Weber.
(As a side note, when Weber gave this tease, I trusted him—he’s been notoriously good during our interviews about vaguely teasing in an accurate way—but the pieces didn’t seem to exactly fit. He was correct! The perfect tease. Also, if his mom wants to share some spoilers about what happens next, I am all ears; this is going to be a long hiatus.)
The rest of the episode was great, too. Sully not getting a compassionate release was BS, but I’m glad Ripley was able to reunite him with his family at the hospital. Sarah butting heads with Charles was fantastic and something I’d love to see more of. (Sarah and Maggie together was also a fantastic beat. But wow to Maggie not feeling sparks with Loren…did not peg them as the next couple to likely be doomed.) A bit of Lenox backstory! I also absolutely loved and was charmed by the impromptu bedside wedding. As I said, a great hour.
THE FLOOR: Aw, poor Virginia got cut early…I assumed she wouldn’t make it to the end based on a few of her comments about being tired after doing multiple duels, but I’m sorry for her it happened this early.
Absolutely brutal—but fair!—Austin targeted Paul because Paul had admitted to him that he had only lived in New York for a year. And, uh, it showed. On the flip side, the animal sounds round was very funny, but Austin completely lost it for himself when he didn’t realize it was his turn.
And, hey, Danny coming in at the end to win a round and half the board was badass. Going to make him a target going forward, but at least he got the money now.
CHICAGO FIRE: Oh, we got a Tuesday mention! My heart, man.
The Lizzy storyline was a gut-punch and also made me so happy she did go to Violet at the end of the hour. It’s a strength to admit you need help/someone and Jocelyn Hudon was fantastic. That being said: Look, it’s not this particular show’s fault, but we’re now at (at least) three shows in the past couple of weeks that have shown what appears to be a suicide attempt. I understand spoilers and everything, but for content like that, can we please start normalizing warnings and PSAs ahead of the episode airing? The “if you need help” card at the end of these shows doesn’t help if people were triggered 20-30 minutes earlier. (And may have already turned it off.)
Definitely alarmed about the Cruz of it all. Even before the blatant threat—which, cool, great, always fun to be confronted, alone, like that—the cremation remains in a bullet? Yikes, yikes, yikes.
THE SUMMIT: After this long playing this game, Therron didn’t realize maybe he shouldn’t have grabbed it first?! But, also, I’m sorry, it was dumb to vote out Dusty. I’m not necessarily advocating keeping the (on paper) weaker links to make the strong feel stronger, but this isn’t the kind of game where there is one guaranteed winner. They could all lose! Wouldn’t you rather have a portion of the prize with a strong competitor versus nothing because you couldn’t make your days?
Also, production—of course—couldn’t predict a 24-hour storm, but I’m so curious how that plays into everything. A 24-hour break for these guys, who have to be absolutely beat, could seriously change the entire game for some players.
CHICAGO P.D.: Mess, mess, mess, mess. I’m glad Torres’ secret is now out, but I’m also so glad there was time for small, personal beats—like Ruzek being livid Torres put Burgess in that position—and, well…mess. (I’m really curious to see how Torres and Cook interact in the aftermath of this, when they actually have a chance to breathe and she can process his betrayal.)
It really felt like the only way the story could/would end was Gloria’s death, but it was still absolutely tragic and going to fundamentally haunt Torres for a long, long time. Not only did she save him, but the (oft-repeated) refrain that they’re the same…how does he not second-guess everything for the foreseeable future? But, wow, Benjamin Levy Aguilar was great as Torres was begging and pleading with God as Gloria was dying.
So, does Reid have Intelligence bugged, or…? And WTF is he going to do with this information?
