THE EQUALIZER

“The Fight for Life” – McCall and Mel go undercover in a prison to find a woman who went missing on the day she was scheduled to be released, on the CBS Original series THE EQUALIZER, Sunday, Dec. 1 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/9:30-10:30 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs). Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

THE EQUALIZER: Unfortunately, I largely found myself frustrated with this episode. It wasn’t great earlier in the season when it felt like the stories were so split we had a bunch of subplots in an episode just so the series regulars had something to do, and this felt like a return to that kind of storytelling. It felt like Aunt Vi being smitten by a new guy or Delilah trying to introduce her dad to her boyfriend could have been the B-plot here and there wasn’t enough given to either story to actually justify the amount of time they got. (So either they could have been trimmed or one could have been expanded to have more weight.)

And the in medias res device for Robyn in jail wasn’t necessary, either. It felt like so much that story (including Mel’s bout of PTSD!) was actually underdeveloped, so I would have much rather had that time back to devote to the actual story instead of seeing those scenes twice when we caught up to the teaser. Alas.

(All that being said: Does anyone else want to rewatch CHICAGO after watching Queen Latifah play a character in jail? Different roles, obviously, but…)
