About Last Night…FBI, FBI: INTERNATIONAL, THE IRRATIONAL, and More
December 4, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
ST. DENIS MEDICAL: Oh my God, the quest for the candy bar was so funny. Not a thing I’d do in real life, but the kind of petty activity that could be fun and was definitely fun to watch. (On both sides.)
FBI: For months, the Ella situation has felt like a slo-mo trainwreck: It seemed like Maggie was doomed for heartbreak, but I also hoped maybe it wouldn’t end the way I thought it would. (And, to be fair, we’ve seen SVU’s Olivia and CPD’s Burgess get to pursue motherhood via adoption; it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Wolf Entertainment shows.) I guess the only silver lining was that Maggie realized she needed to let Ella go versus the decision/loss being forced on her, but, ugh, my heart. I feel terrible for them all.
The case itself was actually one of the better ones of the season, though. I’m kind of shocked FBI was the first of these shows to dig into the tradwife world (even with a twist), but the situation/case was way, way, way more dark than I guessed at the start.
THE VOICE: Well, at least three of the five contestants who made it to the finals were correct.
FBI: INTERNATIONAL: Man, I’m loving the new team dynamic. Cam and Wes’ history, in particular, added a good additional layer to the episode. Yes, Cam’s boss would likely have her back and support her when she was down on herself, but Wes trained her. His words of support and reiterating she was supported and had a team behind her carried more weight. And he also trusted her enough to open up about a certain important work clusterf**k, which I imagine will be important in the coming weeks.
And it was very cute they made Wes buy them drinks at the end. He may be their boss, but, as they pointed out, he’s still the new guy.
THE IRRATIONAL: While I know a lot about fandom—both as someone who has deeply loved things and also as someone who has been a reporter for approximately 98123717 years—the K-pop world remains one of my pop culture blind spots. So with the caveat that I can’t really speak to the accuracy of that level, I thought the show did a good job of showing the complexity of how famous people have to balance the image they want projected to the world versus how they’re living their actual lives…and what fans think they know/expect from celebrities they worship.
They also did a good job of balancing the fact Rose’s job sometimes makes her clean up pretty awful things with the reasoning for why. (That end “I love you” was lovely, too. Please don’t mess up Rose and Alec, writers!)
(Poor Marisa. But hopefully it’s a good thing her new boss was so inspired by, uh, her?)
FBI: MOST WANTED: Okay, my first thought for the first few minutes was, “Did someone just watch MISS CONGENIALITY?” It ended up being way more complicated and interesting than my first impression. (MISS CONGENIALITY forever, though.) It felt easy enough to guess the “who did it” at first, but the complexity of her being just a regular assassin (turned CIA asset?!) versus wanting to do it all for the beauty pageant glory was a good additional beat.
I also didn’t see that Ethan twist coming. There has to be more, but I’m blanking on what it could be. (Also, Hana, you’re an FBI agent! Let him explain and then storm off. At the very least, you need to know what he was involved with and how it might impact your career.)
