ABC is making another attempt at expanding THE ROOKIE universe: The network is in early development of a new spinoff penned by THE ROOKIE creator Alexi Hawley, sources confirm to Give Me My Remote.

The potential spinoff will follow a Washington state “male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.” This echoes THE ROOKIE’s path—which had Nathan Fillion‘s John Nolan join the LAPD after a traumatic event made him reevaluate his life—and differs from the previous spinoff, THE ROOKIE: FEDS, which followed a new FBI agent.

THE ROOKIE is going into its seventh season, with its premiere set to bow on Tuesday, January 7. The series also just celebrated its 100th episode last year.

The last attempt to expand the universe, THE ROOKIE: FEDS, was introduced via a backdoor spinoff on THE ROOKIE. The Niecy Nash-Betts-led show lasted for a season, though THE ROOKIE brought a few of the FEDS characters back for the season 6 finale of the mothership.

Hawley, Fillion, Michelle Chapman, and Bill Norcross are set to executive produce the potential spinoff. Lionsgate Television will co-produce with 20th Television.

Deadline was first to report the news.
