“Face Off” — It has been a year since Rossi nearly died at the hands of Everett Lynch, a.k.a. “The Chameleon,” and he has developed some new theories, with inspiration from his former partner, Jason Gideon (Ben Savage). The BAU team sets out on an epic hunt to capture Lynch, in the cliff-hanger to the series finale episode of CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Feb. 19 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. “And in the End” — Following an explosive face-to-face encounter with Everett Lynch, a.k.a. “The Chameleon,” Dr. Reid suffers from a brain injury and, while experiencing hallucinations, is visited by ghosts from his past. Also, the BAU makes a shocking discovery about Lynch that affects Rossi personally, and the entire BAU team comes together to celebrate Rossi’s retirement, on the series finale of CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Feb. 19 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Gubler played Dr. Spencer Reid for more than 300 episodes during CRIMINAL MINDS’ original CBS run; he last appeared in the 2020 then-series finale. This marks his first appearance on the streaming continuation, which is expected to air its third season in 2025.

“Our hope is that the team members that we ended the series with on CBS will be able to come back and play at some point,” showrunner Erica Messer told reporters during a 2022 panel promoting CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION. “But everybody does have other projects.”

“It’s a little bit more of a mystery what Reid and Simmons are up to, but they’re certainly not forgotten,” she continued. “Dr. Reid, and I believe Matt Simmons’ desks are there [on set], still have stuff on it…So we’re definitely playing that, that they are gone-gone. Let’s put it that way.”

Notably, this is just set to be a brief appearance versus a full-time return: Gubler is also attached to star in the CBS pilot EINSTEIN.

The actor first announced his return to the franchise in an interview with the Italian outlet Ansa.
