GHOSTS, FAST FRIENDS, and ELSBETH

“A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 1” and “A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 2” – A leaky water heater mishap threatens to ruin holiday plans as Sam and Jay prepare to host Jay’s hard-to-please dad, Mahesh (Bernard White), difficult-to-impress mom, Champa (Sakina Jaffrey), and sister Bela (Punam Patel), on a one-hour GHOSTSMAS special of the CBS Original series GHOSTS, Thursday, Dec. 19 (8:00-9:01 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

GHOSTS: We knew that Jay would see the ghosts at some point this season, but for some reason it never dawned on me that a possession might be the cause. Oh my God, I loved it. A little bittersweet because it will be really hard to replicate—which, I suppose, is good so they don’t overuse the device—but I’m so glad Jay got to actually see the ghosts. I’m so curious how it impacts the next episode and how he/they utilize Sam as their go-between. (Also, Jay naming his restaurant after his dad? My heart, man.)

Similarly, I do wonder if having Pete’s family move away was a quasi-way to limit him from leaving as frequently as he has been. Of course, the biggest thing was him being in control of Jay’s body and being able to say/hug his kid (again, my heart!), but this is a loss for him—he won’t be able to visit the way he could before. It doesn’t remove his power, but he’s back to mourning and missing them the way he was before he learned what he could do.

A fantastic episode, though. So glad the show ended 2024 so strong.

FAST FRIENDS: I think there is/was an interesting idea here, but the execution is kind of a mess. I appreciate that the questions are a bit deeper than just the superficial questions I was worried we might get.

But the time/racing element didn’t work for me. Watching three teams repeat the same thing (and learn the instructions for each room each time) felt like a waste, especially for a streaming show where you won’t have viewers potentially tuning in mid-episode. And we didn’t have any kind of real idea of who was in the lead, so the time bonuses and deductions didn’t really mean anything as a viewer until the very end, and by then…meh. I get they likely wanted to utilize as much of the FRIENDS Experience space as possible, but I would have rather had a really good game a la the trivia contest in “The One with the Embryos” versus…Bamboozled.

ELSBETH: I’m really, really excited to see Elsbeth and Wagner team up to take down the judge. It never really dawned on me that his connections to the society world could be useful—especially given the way Crawford touts his lineage—but, really, it could be a real difference. And I so love that Elsbeth and Wagner went from working against each other in season 1 to this dynamic duo now. What a great way to keep them actively engaged together.

Poor Kaya, though. There’s nothing Elsbeth really could have told her about the Chicago mess, but now it’s out there, on the news, and Kaya might have to contend with how little she actually knows her new friend.
