ON CALL’s Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente Preview Their On-Screen Partnership: ‘It’s Going to Change a Million Different Ways’
December 20, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
In the new Wolf Entertainment-produced Prime Video series ON CALL—co-created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf—veteran Long Beach police officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) is tasked with training rookie officer Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente). (The half-hour drama debuts Thursday, January 9 with all episodes dropping at once.)
Over the course of the show’s eight-episode first season—which is told via a mixture of traditional camerawork, as well as utilizing bodycam and dash-cam footage from the calls Harmon and Diaz take—the duo establishes an unconventional partnership.
The police drama genre has included some iconic pairings, including multiple memorable duos within the Wolf Entertainment world, so getting their on-screen dynamic just right was top of mind for the actors.
“Trust…I think that’s the biggest thing,” Larracuente tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Not only…as the characters, trusting in your partner, but also as actors trusting in your scene partner. And knowing that…you’re going to show up prepared, and whatever you give is going to be reciprocated right back at you. So I think trust is the first thing that stands out to me.”
But that easy off-screen dynamic had its own challenges, too. “I also love that we could earn it,” Bellisario says. “I remember distinctly shooting the scene with us in the car that was the audition scene, and Eriq [LaSalle, who also co-stars in the show] was directing, and there was one take where he was like, ‘You guys, I’m seeing the friendship too much. You guys have known each other now for three weeks, and I see your friendship.’ He’s like, ‘You don’t have it yet. You haven’t earned it yet.’”
“And I love that we got the runway over the course of this first season to figure out what, exactly…is their relationship,” she continues. “They don’t know at the beginning. It’s going to change a million different ways over the course of the season, and we get to earn it with each scene. And so I loved that we had that opportunity.”
