Joining a show with over 200 episodes under its belt isn’t always easy—especially when most of the series regulars have been working together for the duration of the series—but the CHICAGO P.D. team has made it clear that Toya Turner (who plays Kiana Cook) has been a very welcome addition to the show.

“I honestly feel like she’s been there forever,” Marina Squerciati, who plays Kim Burgess, tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “She’s just incredible and such a different cadence—but totally seamless in the bullpen. Which…the bullpen can break people. Like, people have walked out of there in tears because we have a rhythm. And she just started playing her instrument seamlessly into ours. It was pretty incredible.”

“And it’s fun,” she continues. “It’s always fun to have somebody new. How do you relate to them? How do they relate to you? Do they like you? Do they not like you? All these unspoken things that you can weave into data dumps, if you will.”

It helps that as Turner is adjusting to her new series, Cook is finding her way in the new unit. “There’s this moment in a future episode where one of the Intelligence unit [members]…improvised a line, and I just feel like they were talking to not just Cook, but me, personally,” she says. “And it literally just makes me cry. They’re…probably gonna keep it in the episode, but it makes me feel like I’m officially in. Like I’m officially part of it…it makes me feel home; like I’m at home and I have a family.”

Turner relays that she’s also been feeling the welcome on-screen and off. “The on-screen, off-screen is kind of blending in together…[them embracing Kiana is exactly how they were; that is exactly how they have been to me since I’ve gotten on the show,” she says. “They’re really like a family. My manager came and visited the set. He was like, ‘What is going on here?…Why is it so phenomenal here? Why are people acting like it’s their first season on the show? Like, what is going on? Why is everyone so loving and kind and hugging each other?’ And it’s just very odd, in the most beautiful way.”

“It’s something very family-like on this that I’ve never experienced working on a show [before], as pleasant as they have been,” she continues. “Something is going on here, like they love each other. And I think they also love what they do. They love this show. They love the characters, they’re excited about it. And it just makes me want to go harder.”
