About Last Night…GOING DUTCH and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

GOING DUTCH: For better or worse, I was expecting pretty much nothing from this show. I like several people involved, but it’s been a long time since I regularly watched a Fox live-action comedy (2017, insanely enough, per a quick check), so I was quasi-resigned to getting through a few episodes of this, but it not being enough to actually grab me. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised!

The show was charming; there was also a solid, interesting familial dynamic as a potential core. It felt silly without being ridiculous. It still made me miss ENLISTED (an underrated gem), but there was the spark of something interesting/unique here, too. I’ll be sticking with it for at least the first season.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET: “The Damage Done”: Ugh, whenever kids hide in a closet to survive a brutal crime, it absolutely breaks my heart. Obviously thank goodness for their safety, but the fear and trauma they had to have gone through…

While this wasn’t technically a two-parter, everything about the episode felt unfinished. And I’m not sure how much of that is HOMICIDE and us having to live in the shades of gray and how much they’re actually going to come back to this turf war. At the very least, the murder at the vigil at the end felt like a very pointed (figurative) shot/declaration. We’re also getting close to the end of the season, so we’ll see how this does (or doesn’t) weave into the end-of-season storytelling.
