About Last Night…GOLDEN GLOBES and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET
January 6, 2025 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!
GOLDEN GLOBES: On a production level, the show was a mess. The announced and written fun facts were bizarre, and sometimes distracting. The directing choices were unflattering and claustrophobic. The staging was baffling. It’s genuinely bizarre how bad the show looked.
The show itself, however? There was a lot of good. A lot of the TV stuff felt like it was a repeat of the fall Emmys, which, sure, can be tedious, but there were some…memorable moments. (I missed Kathy Bates jokingly tearing up her speech after she lost as I was updating the winner list, but it was hilarious to see online in the aftermath. I was so confused by Sofía Vergara’s joking yells at Jodie Foster, but, hey, they were both amused.)
There were a lot of bits that lasted too long, but, shockingly, not all of the presenter banter was awful. Nikki Glaser had a thankless job, but largely navigated it well. There were a handful of jokes that I wasn’t personally comfortable with, but a lot of the industry-specific stuff worked for me. And it certainly worked better than last year’s situation.
HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET: “The Wedding”: If I didn’t know better, I’d think this was Lewis’ last episode—it felt that bizarre and rushed in trying to give him a happy ending. (Of sorts.)
There have been a lot of episodes I’ve wanted to know more about, but this is one of the few that my overwhelming thought was, “Why?” while/after watching it. It’s also possible it’s something I’ll enjoy more upon rewatch (some day) because it is so heavily focused on character-centric things and I do tend to love that. But on first watch, it’s just…bizarre.
I believed Lewis that he was going to get married and his engagement was legitimate, but the rush was odd. Even after hearing his reasoning…it was odd. And betting that everyone could drop everything to pull together a wedding in a few hours—when their unit is normally overwhelmed with cases?!—was…a choice.
(I didn’t need/want them to explore Lewis/Kay, but it’s also kind of odd they made a couple of comments about him allegedly having feelings for her if the intention was to—seemingly—do absolutely nothing with it.)
Speaking of Kay: Again, with the “Why?”…Melissa Leo playing Kay’s sister was a weird choice, too?
(But of course Mary went into labor after insisting she wouldn’t.)
On the bright side:
“That’s really paranoid, Munch.”
“Thank you.”
