With a wedding on the horizon and a few potential couples in the mix, love is (kind of) in the air on CHICAGO P.D.

“Yeah, I know, we do have a lot of romance—what’s going on?” CHICAGO P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan jokes to Give Me My Remote. “The Atwater-Val [dynamic] is very exciting; we’re working on that one right now, so it’s sort of top of mind in my head.”

When viewers first met psychiatrist Val (Natalee Linez), she and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) sparked as strangers at a bar. They ended up working a case together, and the duo started a casual fling.  “It’s been fun, because I think the way we set up that relationship was so, like, no strings attached,” Sigan points out. “We’re doing this because I think they both clearly needed it—it was this release, and it was this thing that could just be for the two of them and allow them to be really present and not thinking about all the other people that need things from them. And then, when we get to see the pair of them again, it will kind of be that inflection point of how long can you sustain that? How long is that good for you? How long does that kind of retain its fun? And at what point do you have to make the decision, is this more? Is this something we should let go of?”

“And that question, I think, what that question brings up, and why the pair of them have shaped this relationship in that way, is really interesting,” she continues. “We haven’t seen Atwater in a committed relationship in a long time, and it usually goes so poorly for him, right? It’s usually so high stakes and dramatic, and so it’s interesting to see is he willing to get into something more? He’s got so much on his plate, and would it be good for him to have something more? And why has he not? So that’s been really fun to write.”

Chicago PD Chapman Voight love confession

Equally complicated is the dynamic between ASA Chapman (Sara Bues) and Voight (Jason Beghe): The two had developed a quasi-partnership and a solid working relationship…and then after Voight got mad that Chapman tried to protect him, she bluntly told him she cared about him and there was nothing he could do about it. Oh, and she was leaving to go to Denver for a few months.

When Chapman returns, “Chapman-Voight is fascinating,” Sigan previews. “It’s, again, a slow burn between the two of them. It’s a lot, I think, for Voight to get to that place with anybody. And so even, like, take out the romance, it would be hard for him to get that intimate with somebody. And so that’s been fun to write, and you’ll see just really slow [storytelling], sort of going at their pace.”

Chicago PD Burzek wedding

One couple that’s solid? Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Burgess (Marina Squerciati), who are set for a wedding in 2025. “We will have the wedding—it’s been fun to plan,” Sigan says with a laugh. “I think we are settling on probably something a bit middle ground: Not a courthouse wedding, but not something gigantic. That feels like them, and feels simple and grounded, but also has all the people they love there. And so that’s probably a season finale-type [event].”

CHICAGO P.D., Wednesdays, 10/9c, NBC
