When LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT returns on Thursday, January 16, Carisi (Peter Scanavino) is still struggling in the aftermath of his traumatic hostage experience.

“But he also doesn’t quite know how to get the help that he needs,” Scanavino previously acknowledged to Give Me My Remote. “People say therapy, but that’s a pretty general term. There’s many different kinds and many different ways somebody can find help. I think that’s something that he’s gonna have to determine and find out what that is and what that looks like for him. That’ll be a part of his journey going forward.”

Unfortunately for the ADA, he’s not able to brush things off as easily as he might like. In an exclusive clip from “First Light,” Carisi tries to return to the deli—where he walked in on a robbery in progress in “Cornered,” which spiraled into the hostage takers committing a murder (of the deli worker) and sexual assault (of one of the hostages)—for coffee and a bagel…and is immediately haunted by flashbacks. He’s further thrown when he discovers coffee is now self-serve, and decides to just get out of there ASAP.

Though Carisi had previously reiterated he was fine, Scanavino shared that his character would have to face things were more complex than he wanted to admitted. “Well, I don’t know necessarily if I would call it a rock bottom, but I think he starts to get glimpses of what life will be like if he just lets this thing fester,” he said. “And I think he can say that’s not what I want.”
