THE ROOKIE’s Alexi Hawley Teases the Potential New Spinoff: ‘It’s Within Our Universe’

With THE ROOKIE an established hit for ABC, the network is trying once again to expand the universe.

Back in 2022, the franchise grew to include THE ROOKIE: FEDS, which was introduced via a backdoor spinoff on THE ROOKIE. The Niecy Nash-Betts-led show lasted for a season, with THE ROOKIE bringing back a few characters from the spinoff into its world in the season 6 finale and season 7 premiere.

Now, ABC is developing a cop-centric spinoff, which would follow a Washington state “male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.” (This parallels what THE ROOKIE did with Nathan Fillion‘s John Nolan in the LAPD.)

Though the potential new series would be in a different state, “it’s not entirely separate,” THE ROOKIE creator Alexi Hawley tells Give Me My Remote. (Hawley is also penning the script for the potential spinoff.)

“It’s early days and it’s being developed…as a sort of standalone pilot, as opposed to what we did with FEDS, which was an embedded couple of episodes with Niecy,” he notes. “The sort of vagaries of timelines [with production of THE ROOKIE season 7 ending before the new spinoff’s fate was determined] and all that kind of stuff makes it a little hard to plant seeds to know when to pay them off.”

But in success, “it’s within our universe,” he teases. “And, you know, we might see some crossover.”
