Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

LADIES & GENTLEMEN … 50 YEARS OF SNL MUSIC: We’ve gotten a lot of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE anniversary specials tonight, but it’s also impressive how well they’ve been done and how many genuinely feel different.

The opening, by itself, was brilliant. Not only was it visually compelling, but mashing up all of those different songs was unexpected and also incredible. Questlove and Oz Rodriguez crafted an instantly memorable and eye-catching start to the documentary.

I will say, I would have easily watched a whole miniseries about the music. They did a good job of digging into some of the controversies, and the subsections of music on the show (impersonations, the digital shorts) that I didn’t think about when starting this. But, man, what a fun documentary.

I haven’t read coverage around this—I wanted to go in as fresh as possible—but I am curious whether there was a conscious decision to not get, say, someone like Ashlee Simpson to do an interview or whether they thought having people talk about the situation was enough. (I would not blame her if she never wanted to discuss it again, but it would also, selfishly, be fascinating to hear her perspective now.)
