After being brutally shot and left in critical condition in the FBI: INTERNATIONAL fall finale—and a few hiccups in the winter premiere—Fly Team’s Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) is finally officially in the clear and on the road to recovery.

But how will this brush with death impact Vo going forward? Vidotto offers a tease of what’s to come to Give Me My Remote…

Vo’s fine, thank goodness, but this was a very, very serious physical ordeal. What can you share about when we will see her next, and what kind of state she will be in, physically?
She will still be recovering from the injury, but there is a time [jump], and she will still be recovering. But Vo is very eager, and she’s very hungry to be back on the Fly Team and serve the Fly Team and protect Americans.

I think she also wants to redeem herself, in a way, and prove to Wes—who was her training agent at West Point in the past—that she still belongs on this team after going on four years now…that, like, I can still handle this. And I think she’s had great mentors, which are her fellow Fly Team members, who’ve been severely injured in the past, and how did they handle it? So I think when you see other people go through things that are traumatizing, your brain subconsciously goes, “Okay, so that’s how to do it.”

Raines (Carter Redwood) was injured seriously last season. Given how close they have been at times, how much is she specifically leaning on him as either guidance or just to get through this?
You know, I think that’s the thing with Vo—she’s not very open in that way. I don’t think she’s leaned much on Raines. I don’t think she’s good at asking for help. [Laughs.] And that’s where family comes in: When it’s like, “You[‘ve] got to eat your food even though you’re not hungry; you gotta eat it.” And so I think Wes definitely brings that element. He’s looking out for his team. He’s the leader.

How much are we seeing of the emotional toll on Vo? The physical recovery is something that we can physically see, but is this something we’re seeing her contend with emotionally immediately or do you think it might fester for six months, a year, before actually blowing up?
Yeah, I think it’s most likely the latter. She’s just so eager. [Laughs.] It might pop up later, but she’s just resilient. And she’s second-in-command, and she wants to be there for the team, for Wes. She’s resilient.

Her family was informed about her gunshot in this episode. How much are they playing into what we might see of her recovery process?
Oh my gosh, that is a great question, and I don’t think that was even brought into the conversation. [Pauses.] Wow. Yeah. I think what we focused on was just the Fly Team, and not so much, you know, Vo’s personal world.

That makes sense. The Fly Team has changed a number of times during the show’s run so far. I’m curious, for you, how much do you think that’s impacting Vo’s ability to open up to people while she’s recovering?
Oh, yeah, it would have been different, for sure [if the team had been the same the whole time]. Different people, different connections. The team has changed throughout, but the support within the team is always there. I think that’s the basis of Fly Team—you always have to support each other, no matter your background or whatever disagreement. I wish that we would disagree with each other more for these cases; I love drama. [Laughs.] You can still move a story forward while still having differences. But, you know, anytime there’s a new leader that steps in, they know their job, and it’s to support and do what’s best for the team as a whole.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen Vo stepping into leadership positions at various points. How much is she aspiring to be a leader of her own unit in the future, and how might that impact her working relationship with Wes as she thinks about her career going forward?
[Laughs.] Yeah, very much. So I don’t think she’s gonna stop anytime soon. And, yeah, she’s just really eager. How it’ll affect her and Wes, you know, I think when you’ve got a lot of capable people in the room, you don’t want to overstep, but you definitely want to stand your ground. You have a lot to learn from each other, but I think with Vo’s background, her being rebellious—she was reported back in her past for being a little hot-headed or whatever. That’s what I remember from Vo coming into the show. She was a little smart aleck. And I liked that part! I liked the rebelliousness, talking back. That’s good drama.

If you got to lean more into that rebelliousness, how might it impact her ability to be a leader?
I think it’s going to be a balance. And it’s always fun to watch somebody balance their personality. And just like in real life, you have to balance being in a professional work [space]. But how do you not lose yourself, and how do you stay true to yourself while still being professional? And sometimes things can slip through the cracks. But it’s fun to watch humans try to balance different faces because we have multiple tonalities and how we behave in front of different people, you know, family, friends, colleagues, things like that. And especially for TV, it’s fun. You want to watch a character say and do things that would not be appropriate or would not fly in real life. You want an outlet to be like, “Yes, you tell her that!” [Laughs.]

One of the wild cards Fly Team has in the mix right now is Booth (Jay Hayden), who is someone who is extremely loyal to Wes, but also has his moments of impulsivity. What can you tease about how Vo will be dealing with him?
Yeah. [Laughs.] Booth reminds me of Powell. It’s always fun to have a rebellious agent on with some fun lines and a strong personality to not follow the rules, even though, yes, we take our badges off sometimes. But yeah, they are a wild card for sure.

You know, I think this season, I would think that Vo would want to check Wes or check Booth. But I think with the relationship that Vo and Wes have, she wants to understand the relationship between Wes and Booth, and why he’s putting this much trust into Booth. So I think she’s trying to be more understanding.

One of the things the show has done in the past—but isn’t actively showcasing right now—is romances. For Vo, it feels like there might be a couple of options on the team…
Oh, does she? Are those two love interests work and Tank? [Laughs.]

To be fair, everyone should be obsessed with Tank.
What are the two that you’re suggesting, Marisa?

We’ve spoken about the Raines connection in the past, and certainly there’s chemistry with Wes (Jesse Lee Soffer), too. But, frankly, also almost everyone in that cast has chemistry. So, really, anyone could plausibly be paired with Vo. How much is that something you guys are actively playing? Or is there something coming that you’ve been foreshadowing?
[Laughs.] I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t know that I was getting shot until I finished that script. [Laughs.] So I don’t know unless I ask the writers. Sometimes, you know, I ask, “Okay, what are you guys going to write next? What’s the next episode? Where are we going for the next episode?” And sometimes I don’t. And the gaps where I don’t ask is when I’m the most shocked for anybody’s storyline.

But, look, I think people love romance, and people want to see colleagues get together and find love, if you will. And any wink or fist bump or handshake, Twitter will run with it and create some relationship name. Which they have. So, I mean, there’s so many [people saying,] “Is Raines in love with Amanda Tate?” Just so many love triangles! And we don’t even know which love triangle is real or not. [Laughs.]

Any couple could work!
You’d be like, “Yep, that makes sense. That makes sense.”

Looking ahead, what can you tease what’s coming up that you’re excited about?
We’ve got a storyline for Smitty coming up. I don’t think there’s any, like, Vo-heavy [episodes]. I think it’s just more badass cases, but I don’t know if it’s Vo-heavy.

The FBI franchise has changed a lot over the past few years. With crossovers always a possibility, who are you hoping to work with?
Oh, well, I love [FBI: MOST WANTED’s] Shantel [VanSanten]. Yeah, she’s amazing.

I guess anybody, really, because it’s just a fun experience to get to work with other actors in the same world and ask them a bunch of questions and see how they operate. I mean, we’ve had [FBI’s] Jubal [played by Jeremy Sisto] over a couple times. We had Shantel. Yeah, I would be open for anybody.

Is there anything else you want to tease?
This season is just going to get bigger and better. And I know that’s cheesy and very, very common to say, but I kid you not—it will be bigger and better. It’s even crazy for us.

I mean, last year we ended on top of a giant ski jump in Oslo in the mountains, and there was wind on top of the wind fans that we had going. Can you imagine? That’s just wind on top of wind. [Laughs.] We did not need the extra wind, and it was raining sideways. And you know Michael Katleman, who just loves directing, it was such a joy for him. He’s jumping up and down with his little monitor yelling, like, “Okay, Smitty, you’re looking at the helicopter.” And I wasn’t in that shot because they were moving in closer, so it’s just me and Carter and the crew behind just cracking up in the wind with the rain going sideways. Michael’s jumping up and down, and so excited. That’s pretty epic, if you ask me. I mean, what kind of network show gets to travel around Europe and go to a ski jump and ask if we can film at the tippy top and pretend that there’s a helicopter that we’re shooting at?
