ST. DENIS MEDICAL, FBI: MOST WANTED, THE ROOKIE

THE ROOKIE – “Darkness Falling” – Following his stint at the LAPD, Wesley returns to the district attorney’s office where his past connects him to the team’s investigation. Meanwhile, Bailey and John have conflicting feelings over safety, while Lucy grows suspicious of Seth. TUESDAY, JAN. 28 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EST) on ABC. (Disney/Mike Taing)

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

FBI: Oh, Scola. I can’t fathom what it would be like knowing you lost a loved one over two decades ago and only just now having some element of closure about their remains. It was a beautiful scene where he finally opened up the letter and asked Nina for her help. It was a really lovely moment to show how solid they are and some really beautiful acting from John Boyd and Shantel VanSanten. (I also really loved the scene where Scola tried to reason with their suspect. The tension was handled fantastically.)

ST. DENIS MEDICAL: I am really fascinated by how and when they acknowledge the camera crew and that they’re filming. THE OFFICE obviously dug into that near the end of their run, but it’ll be interesting to see how this show handles things.

The show has slow-played Matt and Serena—I say as if we aren’t mid-season 1; as someone who has survived (ish) much longer slow burns, I’m laughing at myself, too—and the duo was very cute in this episode. In many ways, their subplot reminded me of SCRUBS…that show could go from funny to really moving in the blink of an eye. The entire tone of the scene/story changing when the patient actually started to die was really good work.

And oh my God, Joyce’s off-on boyfriend being the inept notary who was lingering all day was a fun twist. I want to rewatch the episode with that in mind.

KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Man, this made me sad. I was happy Caroline cut Frank off given how dismissive he was being about the harm he was causing her, but it all feels bittersweet given she had to close her restaurant already anyway. Alas.

FBI: INTERNATIONAL: As if worrying about Vo wasn’t stressful enough, Raines got kidnapped, too?! Protect the Fly Team by whatever means necessary, please. Put them in a bubble, something.

I am really intrigued to see how Vo recovers from this; this wasn’t even a “small” shooting. She almost died. She was close to death many times. How does her behavior as an agent change now?

DOC: Well, this was the best episode so far. Part of it was we got a heaping of backstory, but some of the bad behavior was also called out. Yeah, it’s not fair for people to have to re-live all of their traumas just because she lost her memory, but given anything might help her recovery process and something like her child’s death is something that shouldn’t be a mystery to her…I’m glad she knows.

DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: Dixon being a DEAL OR NO DEAL superfan was very funny. But, wow, wow, wow, wow to his game—having the $2 and $5 million case as your final two options? At that point, I don’t blame him for not taking the deal, and he made the correct call. Wow, wow, wow.

I figured CK was safe given the editing and the talking heads, but taking out Storm was an interesting move, sure to make Dixon some enemies.

FBI: MOST WANTED: Well, I can truly say I didn’t see that (awful, gutting) Tink twist coming. Nina’s stressful tension with her father couldn’t stay in a holding pattern forever, but I figured she might get hurt or he might get sick and it might change things. Tink being a victim of domestic violence….yeah, that came out of left field. I am really curious how much of this we see on-screen in the coming episodes and what kind of updates we get. (Alarming, though sadly not unexpected Tink didn’t want to press charges.)

I also did not know about the MOVE bombing until this episode, so good for the team for shining a light on an absolutely awful event.

[For more on the episode, here’s what showrunner David Hudgins shared.]

THE ROOKIE: Before I get to the good, I’ll acknowledge I just don’t get what they’re doing with Bailey. The Jason stuff is scary—and obviously not over—but she’s also acting reckless. Leaving the safety of home was diverting resources and making her less safe. Either straight-up say you won’t go along with the hiding or actually stick to the plan.

Anyway. The serial killer plot was interesting. There were obvious “Day of Death” parallels (as well as SVU, which was more amusing given Noel Fisher’s diabolical role there), but a lot of it was well done. And I laughed at the sorority girls attacking their intruder. It was a good use of Wesley to show his guilt over the actions of someone after he helped free him.

But, man, Nyla…what an MVP. The sequence before and during her attack was so, so well shot to maintain maximum tension. Even knowing she’d be fine, I could feel the stress in my body as I was watching. And the moment with Angela and Nyla in the hospital? Oh, my heart.

Now, how worried do we need to be about Seth and his lies? I’m glad Lucy isn’t ignoring her gut, and I’m really glad she went to Tim (and Kojo) to talk it out. Their relationship may have changed (at least for now), but they can and should still depend on each other, especially for things that are really, really, really potentially professionally messy.

THE IRRATIONAL: Wow, loved getting to see Alec’s father—and I also think it was important that Alec acknowledged that Kylie has a different relationship with their dad because of their difference in ages. You can grow up in the same house and have different childhoods, for a billion different reasons.

I guessed where the procedural element was going, but still a great episode. I do hope we get to explore more of Alec’s relationship with his father in the future, too. (That scene where Eli acknowledged he fell off the wagon the day of Alec’s injury? Ow, ow, ow.)
