Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
ONE CHICAGO: I absolutely loved this crossover.
First of all, this was absolutely the correct approach to doing a franchise-spanning crossover: It was action-packed. It was dramatic. It was traumatic. It felt so completely seamless in terms of being a whole story versus individual episodes. It felt like an event.
But it was also personal. Splitting up Stellaride and Burzek was obviously painful, but led to us seeing these two powerhouse duos contend with a terrifying situation apart and with their colleagues. (More of Kidd and Ruzek in the future, please and thanks.) And we know all four of those people would do whatever they could to save innocent civilians, but adding in their desperate need to reunite with their respective loved ones? Oh, it hurt. It was fantastic. And the lack of regular communication made every bit of contact even more poignant.
And then there’s the Trudy of it all. Even though I knew she’d survive, I started getting emotional over Mouch missing her birthday because I was just so sad for Trudy. Amy Morton played the quiet, resigned heartbreak beautifully. The show handled the tension of the improbability of her survival well, and we got to live with Mouch’s grief and fear while he went through it all. (Like, this poor woman got shot multiple times. She was dead for most of the crossover!) I didn’t think about the split loyalty, how he felt like he should be doing more, but also desperate to be close to his wife, but it was just so good and nuanced and totally gutting.
It is interesting how few of the CHICAGO MED characters were in personal peril, though. I’m okay with that given how well this worked, to be clear! But it feels like if they had a couple with more history on their show, they would have probably been included in some of the life-or-death stakes.
I know these crossovers aren’t easy. It’s a huge ordeal for the writers, crew, and actors. But, man, they knocked it out of the park. It was probably my favorite ONE CHICAGO crossover—and it made me hope we get another one sooner versus later.
(Also, a note, the ONE CHICAGO world is so, so good about casting young performers.)
[For more on the crossover, here’s what the showrunners shared about the fallout to come.]

My hope is that at next year’s crossover the Med couple in peril is Hannah and Archer! (Not that I want them in peril of course…but I definitely want them to be a couple lol).
