Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
CHICAGO MED: The good: For as awful as it was that Doris gave the wrong dose of medicine, Maggie standing up for her was fantastic. And I’m glad Lenox heard her.
The not-as-great: While Ripley’s spiral is plausible, it’s also really tough to watch. And MED is in a weird position where there really are no legacy couples right now. (This isn’t necessary, but it made the impact of the crossover less significant for the MED characters because no MED couples have the history of Burzek, Stellaride, or Trudy/Mouch.) Ripley and Hannah are the only couple the show really has right now, at least with regulars, and there’s been almost nothing but drama between them. If this is a couple the writers actually intend to write to long-term, it would actually help if they had a period of time when they were at least facing problems together (or it was more balanced) versus Ripley spiraling.
Also, my goodness, I was worried they might go down this road but please no to Charles and Jackie. It’s so wildly (professionally) inappropriate.
WILD CARDS: Ah, I missed this show. Truly, what we (I) need right now is a show like this. And, man, it has to gut Ellis that he was so close to getting real answers/closure about his brother’s death, but he wouldn’t be the man he is if he didn’t try to save that young boy instead.
Now, how worried should we be about what Max has planned…?
CHICAGO FIRE: I imagine Kidd’s decision that she wants to expand her family via adoption will be controversial. Personally, I’m torn. On one hand, we’ve seen this particular storyline a lot on this show (and in this franchise, and on a number of Wolf Entertainment shows). On the other…it makes sense. Even before Kidd’s cousin showed up and reiterated how important it was that Kidd had a safe place to land after her parents’ death, a pregnancy would have upended her entire career. On a practical level, it would have basically sidelined Kidd for nearly an entire season. (Barring the show doing a major time jump, which would of course be super complicated with the franchise quasi-staying aligned/in the same universe.) So Kidd wanting to have a baby with Severide, but wanting to consciously bring a child who needs a home into their life versus going through a pregnancy (at least now) makes sense.
Loved Herrmann getting hyperfocused on the stolen hydrants and actually doing good to make a change. If you’re going to have a seat at the table, make it work for you. Pascal seemed so proud, too.
(But LOL to Lizzy and Cole.)
CHICAGO P.D.: Oh, Torres. He’s really been going through it this season and it’s been interesting to see him lean on religion to get through it. I get why he was the one to go under—he was the best person for the job—but is any of this trauma being processed? Or will it become a Thing later in the season/series?
It was a small beat, but I really appreciated that Cook knew this place had meaning to Torres, already. She’s a great cop and colleague, paying attention to the things around her.
