Gabi (Shanola Hampton)’s hope of paying for her crime of kidnapping Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) —with the intention she would be able to heal once she atoned for holding him hostage—took a sharp turn on the Thursday, February 13 episode of FOUND: Sir denied she did anything to him, so no charges were filed and Gabi was released.

“I think it’s just all based on control, right?” Gosselaar tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I mean, Sir is asserting his control. He will allow things to happen to Gabrielle, and certain things he won’t. And in his mind, he’s playing his game.”

“It’s interesting, as we go along—we know how it ends, this season—but a lot of the times, I don’t know how much he plans in advance,” he continues. “Like, is this a master plan, or is he just thinking on his feet? I guess both ways are pretty brilliant. We’re dealing with two brilliant people, two very intellectual people, who are playing a very complicated chess match.”

For Gabi, freedom is a double-edged sword. “When Sir takes that away from her, we are back in the game of cat and mouse,” Hampton says. “We are back playing a chess match. It’s another heaviness that’s on her, ‘Why is he doing that?’ Having to think five steps ahead. There is no break, there is no freedom from Sir.”

After spending decades recovering from the trauma of the kidnapping—and spending a lot of time with him while she was holding him captive—this move still manages to shock Gabi. “She can sort of plan his moves, because she knows him so well, [but] this one she wasn’t [expecting],” Hampton admits. “Who even knew it was conceivable to do that, right? And so he just put her right back in that game of cat and mouse and that same addiction of them doing this thing together.”

“It’s heavy for her,” she continues. “It’s such a heavy season for her, because she still just needs to heal and we haven’t gotten that yet. You still don’t get it after 22 episodes—spoiler alert; she’s still in the process.”
