About Last Night…FBI, THE ROOKIE, FBI: MOST WANTED, and More

“68 Seconds” – Remy calls in the Fugitive Task Force after ex-girlfriend Judge April Brooks is assaulted by a serial rapist. Meanwhile, Remy decides to take the next step in his relationship with Abby after her case in New York winds down, on FBI: MOST WANTED, Tuesday, Feb. 18 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs). Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
ST. DENIS MEDICAL: Oh my God, Serena having an existential crisis around her birthday was so, so funny, as was Alex freaking out thinking her mood was because she didn’t like the birthday gift. (Also: I laughed so hard at the cat darting around the hospital. Cats are gonna cat, man. Even if they potentially have the plague.)
FBI: I was a bit worried going into this episode it might feel too similar to SVU’s “911”—which, yes, aired almost 20 years ago, but was revisited on that show last year—but, thankfully, it had its own rhythms. With two regulars out, it also allowed the JOC characters to play bigger roles than normal both in the hour and the overall investigation.
The most interesting parallel, to me, was how like Olivia before her, Maggie didn’t have her steady partner by her side for this case. (Elliot wasn’t in the SVU episode like OA wasn’t here.) There were fantastic beats between Maggie and Scola; he had her back and was on her side. But there was more than one scene where I wondered how much OA might have pushed Maggie in a different way because of their years of working together in such a close manner. It doesn’t take away from the episode, obviously, but it was just interesting to think about.
Maggie hasn’t had the easiest of seasons, in general, but I’m so glad she was able to save Annalise. And, hey, her chemistry with Joel was very cute and he clearly seemed interested, too. We’ll see where they go.
KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Okay, I don’t even eat meat and I know you can’t give people plastic utensils to cut steak?! Oh my God. Fingers crossed this revamp helps, though.
NIGHT COURT: I need a Julianne and Roz team up in the future, please and thank you, writers!
FBI: INTERNATIONAL: I’m intrigued, but also kind of confused, by what they’re doing with the Fly Team this year. Obviously, Quinn is there for a very specific reason, but she’s now the second addition we’ve had to the team for multiple episodes. (While some of our guys haven’t had “big” episodes yet.) Showrunner Matt Olmstead is someone who tends to be very intentional with how he introduces characters, and I’m just…intrigued by all of this.
But Quinn is also someone who is trying to be stealthy while also around an entire team of agents. Will she find dirt on Wes? Or will some realize she’s up to something first?
No matter what, I do love that Vo was so mentoring to her, so protective. I just hope this doesn’t destroy them all.
DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: CK being the first person to ever beat the banker twice is crazy. (I know we’re only partway through season 2, but still.) Seychelle’s exit was also insane. I do wonder how much of this general level of drama would have been there if Dr. Will hadn’t joined the show and stirred things up, though.
Absolutely wild that CK then, after surviving the banker, opted to screw over her team for personal safety. Yeah, it might save her this week, but this is not a game you can really win without at least one ally.
David’s final run versus the banker was also one of the most impressive we’ve seen on the show so far. I was happy he won, but was worried about what it would do to him if he kept his word/eliminated Dickson. I’m glad he was lying to Dr. Will and did evict him…but I also get why Dr. Will was annoyed about being eliminated by someone else’s hands instead of controlling his own fate. The Family has long had a target on their back, but with Dr. Will gone, it will be interesting to see how much more bonkers it gets.
THE ROOKIE: The Seth of it all makes me uncomfortable in a way I finally pinned down: I do not want this man to be lying to Lucy. (And everyone around them, but specifically Lucy as his TO.) But I also don’t want Lucy’s gut to be wrong and he does seem suspicious. It feels like a lose-lose situation.
I’m so, so glad the show utilized Tim in group therapy and he was open about his feelings/regrets—while he was also reminded that Lucy has her own agency, too. Eric Winter was great in that scene, as well as when Tim was giving Nolan advice about his love life.
Outside of the romantic element of Chenford, I’m really, really, really glad Lucy knows she can still call Tim for anything, work-wise. He was her partner. Yeah, I’d like for them to get together ASAP, but their foundation has always been that deep level of trust as friends.
I still don’t really know what to make of the Bailey and Nolan situation, but I guess it’s over, so…
DOC: Well, Sonya treating her rapist had to be an absolute nightmare scenario. I really appreciate how Amy handled it in the present, and how it gave Sonya the agency to get justice both for herself and the man’s other victims. Anya Banerjee and Molly Parker were fantastic in the hour.
FBI: MOST WANTED: Well, this was so well done it made me want to throw up. (I swear that is a compliment, despite, well, the sentiment.)
The women of this show, man. Big and small moments, they came through. Wendy Moniz’s acting while April went through the rape kit. Nina rubbing April’s back briefly after a tough moment. The FTF women in the car talking about their assaults. It was raw, it was painful, it was real. It was gutting.
(And, look, even Remy had a profound moment when he acknowledged that seeing the trophies of the rape made it hit home how catastrophic this situation was.)
It was not an easy episode to get through, but thank you to the team for making it.
THE IRRATIONAL: The Milgram experiment is one of my favorite psych lessons and I was curious going into this episode how it would be utilized. Alec Milgram-ing the TAs (and class) and them not realizing it until Rizwan acknowledged he didn’t feel comfortable participating…and suddenly things clicked into place…was kind of brilliant?! (I mean, devious. But…brilliant.)
I do love that Rose can now talk with Marisa about her relationship with Alec to get advice and feedback. Marisa knows him better than almost anyone and her pointing out that Alec doing an experiment was kind of his gesture of love (as convoluted as it might seem) was a nice moment. (And good for Alec for actually talking to Kylie about it, too, versus just moping or sulking.)
