THE ROOKIE Recap: ‘Wildfire’ Brings an Unexpected Cliffhanger for One Beloved Character

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Tuesday, February 25 episode of THE ROOKIE.]

As THE ROOKIE hit its midseason point in “Wildfire,” the characters faced danger from all angles.

While Nyla (Mekia Cox) and the team tracked suspected serial killer Liam (Seth Gabel), a wildfire spread across Los Angeles, sending people to evacuation centers and limiting where people could travel. And for Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), after Seth (Patrick Keleher) didn’t relay that the fire had changed directions, the former wound up trapped, near death, and Tim acknowledged he still loved Lucy. (Thankfully, they were saved by the end of the hour, but Seth lied and said no one ever shared the road was unsafe.)

Though Liam tried to use the mayhem to get away with another murder, Nyla was able to catch him and finally put him away. She told Grey (Richard T. Jones) that she was now taking all of her vacation time in the aftermath.

Unfortunately for Nyla, she was (likely) correct about needing time off: At an evacuation center, her husband, James (Arjay Smith), reunited with his friend, Kylie (Maria Zhang), who was in a lot of trouble. Not only did Kylie misread their relationship and kiss him—something Nolan (Nathan Fillion) witnessed—but Kylie saw a crime and was being threatened to keep quiet.

Eventually, she told James she did see a shooting and James tried to convince her to come forward—the police could protect her, he promised. James even offered to go to the police station with her…but before Kylie could answer, a car drove by and shot them both.

A horrified Celina (Lisseth Chavez), who had been helping out at the evacuation center, heard the gunshots and rushed out, finding both James and Kylie bleeding out on the ground.
