Before CHICAGO FIRE season 13 kicked off, showrunner Andrea Newman noted the year would be a roller coaster for the first responders at Firehouse 51.

“Going into the season, we kept calling it ‘Lucky 13,’” she told Give Me My Remote at the time. “But we were like, ‘You know, 13 is haunted. It’s a little haunted.’ And that really became the theme [of the season]. And it’s so on point with so many stories, just the theme of shadows and hauntings.”

For power couple Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney)—AKA Stellaride—they’ve battled through a lot already: Complications from their respective families, a new boss for 51, being separated (physically) during a disaster that nearly cost Kidd her life, and the day-to-day dangers of their jobs. But there is a bright spot now, as they embark on expanding their family…though that journey has twists, too.

“Kidd and Severide have decided to start their family through adoption, and the reality of the challenges involved are starting to hit,” Newman previews to GMMR via email. “Becoming parents is not for the weak of heart! These are two people used to being in control, but so much of this process is out of their hands.”

“Suddenly every decision they make—from getting in the middle of a bar fight to trying to save a life on the job—is seen through the lens of potentially being a mother and father,” she continues. “And this will shake them both up, in different ways.”

As the duo balances that, the firehouse will have to contend with being down a member. Carver (Jake Lockett) took steps in recent weeks to deal with his alcohol addiction, but after a relapse, he left to properly get treatment and start the path to recovery.

“Carver is a beloved member of the 51 family, and everyone is rooting for him,” Newman says. “His absence is deeply felt, especially by the people he’s closest to. But addiction is a bumpy road, nothing comes easy, and we don’t sugarcoat that journey. His return to 51 will bring some changes that reverberate with the whole firehouse.”

But the biggest hurdle could still be ahead. The promo for the Wednesday, March 5 episode, “Too Close,” questioned “Who doesn’t make it out alive?” while showcasing multiple characters in dangerous situations.

“Yes, there’s a big loss coming, and it will have a profound effect on the rest of the season,” Newman teases. “As heartbreaking as loss can be, it can also bring people together, so we’ll see the deepening of some relationships… and the fracturing of others. It’s also going to cause a lot of chaos in the last few episodes—buckle up!”
