The tense relationship between CHICAGO P.D.’s Voight (Jason Beghe) and Reid (Shawn Hatosy) got even more complicated on the Wednesday, March 5 episode, “Greater Good.”

With a gang war breaking out, Voight was determined to get justice for a bus driver who ended up in the crossfire. As Intelligence worked the case, a newly-returned Chapman (Sara Bues) told Voight they didn’t have enough for a warrant.

Enter Reid, who insisted he could get the warrant in a half-hour. Voight was skeptical, noting their ASA had said they didn’t have enough. Reid shared his personal backstory with Voight: His mother was killed when he was a child; she was caught up in a bank robbery and shot because she didn’t move to the ground fast enough.

When the stakes are life or death, when people are acting with no morals, “What’s the harm in getting a warrant when you need one?” Reid asked.

Though Reid has been sketchy, “I personally believe that that happened, and it’s true, and that’s what made him become a police officer, and then promote up to where he is,” Hatosy tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I think his intentions are good.”

But Voight realized that Reid had allowed gang member Jesus Otero to clear the streets, and this had been a part of the deputy chief’s larger manipulation. “I think that even in this situation with Otero, he kind of says, ‘Look, yes, Otero’s gang killed somebody, and people did die. But who would you rather have policing this street?’” Hatosy recalls. “‘Should it be Jesus Otero, or should it be these young gangbangers who just kill each other at will and kill random people?’ All of it kind of makes sense. Is it a perfect situation? No, but that is our world. It’s not it’s not perfect, and finding the right people to do the things necessary is how Chief Reid operates. And because he has this dirt on this team, he’s using them to do some unsavory things.”

However Reid also exposed himself by confirming Voight’s theories about his connection to Otero. Is he trying to lull Voight into a sense of brotherhood or is there more to it? “Every time I look at it, I wonder to myself where this is going, because they’re both so intelligent,” Hatosy admits. “So it would be silly for Reid not to [be on guard]; he’s read every file on Voight. He knows what Voight is capable of, and he knows how intelligent he is.”

“So I don’t know, man, that dynamic is very interesting,” he continues. “It’s always kind of filled with this tension because you just never know what’s going to come out of it, which makes for a very exciting scene. I hope Chief Reid survives…eventually, it’s gonna get ugly. It has to, right? So I’ll be looking in my inbox for the next script so I can find out.”

But now that Chapman is back, Voight has looped her into what Reid has on Intelligence…and the duo will attempt to take down Reid.

And when Reid asks Voight to help with something and things go awry, “I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, but…I did have a conversation with [showrunner] Gwen [Sigan] at one point, saying, ‘It would be foolish of Reid not to expect Voight to try to use something against him or come after him. So I hope that Reid is prepared,’” Hatosy recalls. “And she said, ‘Oh, don’t worry. Don’t worry.’ So it’s exciting. Can’t wait to see.”

The actor has been enjoying playing Reid, and hopes to continue on—within reason. “I think, even though it seems like Reid may be an antagonist, I would never approach a character with any thought of like, ‘Oh, I’m a bad guy. How do I indicate that?’” Hatosy says. “I think he comes from an authentic place. He believes [the] things he’s doing are right—and they are to a degree. I just attack it from the way I would any any character, and find who he is, what makes his heart beat, what his DNA is, and I think it’s working out pretty well.”

“[I’m] doing the best I can and, honestly, in a situation like this, the star of this show is the show,” he continues. “CHICAGO P.D. is the star of the show. So if they need to, like, take Reid out to make that show successful, I’m all for whatever they need, you know what I mean?”
