BAYLEE LITTRELL
[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Sunday, March 9 episode of AMERICAN IDOL.]
When Baylee Littrell came to audition for AMERICAN IDOL, new judge Carrie Underwood noted he looked familiar. Baylee acknowledged his father was Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys—and, Underwood noted, the young singer looked just like his father.
“I believe I get my voice from Dad, and hopefully I can do him justice today,” Baylee said in an interview with show producers. “Following in my dad’s footsteps is scary because his career, to me, is one of the most extraordinary in music history.”
Baylee was also aware of the challenges he’d be facing pursuing this career. “Trust me: I wish I wanted to do something completely different, but if I’m not doing music, there’s no way I can really exist,” he said.
“Obviously growing up in the industry, lot of people would look at that as such a perk,” Brian said in a separate interview. “But it’s not easy. I’ve always told everybody he’s ten times more talented than I ever was.”
Baylee got the chance to show it off with his audition, performing his original song, “Waiting on Myself to Die”
Afterward, Underwood said she thought he could go very far, while Luke Bryan asked if Brian might come and sing with Baylee. Baylee brought in his father, and they sang the chorus of “Waiting on Myself to Die” together.
Underwood noted it wasn’t officially a part of the audition, but it was noteworthy that Baylee was able to hold his own ground while singing with his superstar dad. Underwood, Bryan, and Lionel Richie gave Baylee a “yes,” and he officially made it the next round of competition.
“Being able to sing my original and get through and the judges love it, that meant the world,” Baylee said after.
