AMERICAN IDOL: Sophia Humbert and the Judges Destroy a Car as She Auditions with ‘Before He Cheats’

AMERICAN IDOL contestant Sophia Humbert picked a big song for her audition: On the Sunday, March 23 episode, she sang Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” for judges Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.

While Humbert was clearly talented, they were worried about the emotion she was bringing to the song.

“I feel like a song like that, though, has to be a little rage in there somewhere,” Underwood pointed out. She also noted, “The reason I love songs like that is because even though I would never do something like that, it’s like you get to sing your way through it.”

Bryan joked that prior to working with Underwood on IDOL, “I thought she knocked headlights out of stuff and totaled nice trucks.” His solution to help Humbert? “It’s exercise time,” Bryan said.

The show then cut to the judges, Humbert, and host Ryan Seacrest, who were on location, with a car. Humbert was encouraged to sing again as Underwood dug a key into the side of the truck. Humbert, for her part, broke the headlight while singing…and the second take of her audition got a yes from the judges.

“Now you have to take your delinquent child home,” Richie joked to Humbert’s parents, who also watched the audition.
