Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

CHICAGO MED: I assumed we wouldn’t see Ripley while he was recovering—or we’d pick up days/weeks later when he was better—but this was a really lovely way of working him into the episode. His hospital time (as a patient) gave us the excellent casual scene of him and Frost, the lovely (proper) reunion with Charles, and, of course, his job back from Goodwin.

Okay, a brain tumor helping wake up a decades-deep coma patient is both insane and terrifying. I’m sure it’s medically sound but my goodness what a double-edged sword. It was fantastic that Goodwin had a history with the family and she acknowledged she misplayed the situation earlier in her career. While Goodwin didn’t do anything wrong—she was just honest about what she’d do; unfortunately, things didn’t work out the way any of them hoped—I can understand why Angela quasi-blamed her.

The Frost situation broke my heart. We know his body had a visceral reaction to Ainsley showing up, but Frost was more actively in denial about the trauma and grooming he went through. I’m glad Maggie tried to call it out, but there’s also only so much anyone can do in a situation like that.

I’m also glad Liam’s father, eventually, stood up for him, but oh my God, that poor child.

WILD CARDS: Oh my goodness, I laughed out loud at RGF. Somehow Resting Grumpy Face is even more amusing and specific than, uh, RBF. (I assume they couldn’t curse like that, but it led to a fun pivot.)

A fun episode, overall. I kept thinking about how much fun (and hard work, to be clear) the props/set decorators and costume team must have had with this episode. It felt like an appropriately wild step into the fashion world.

THE MASKED SINGER: I was actually surprised Cherry Blossom was unmasked, but I figured it was someone connected to Bob Saget; the reveal it was Candace Cameron Bure made sense.

CHICAGO FIRE: Who can’t relate to Cruz accidentally saying the wrong thing and spiraling? But it led to one of the best moments of the season: 51 showing up for Monica’s service, despite Pascal pushing them away. And, yes, it absolutely could have gone the other way, but they have his back and he needed to know that—especially when they couldn’t change their reports to (lie and) give him the answers he wanted to hear.

Dermot Mulroney was fantastic as Pascal was despondent in the aftermath of Monica’s death. The chief was frantic and reckless, so desperate to get answers, but not content with what he was discovering. The moment he cracked when he was alone felt like it was both a relief and a gut punch. This isn’t something that will be over in a single episode, so I’m curious how Pascal handles his grief going forward…and how/if things change now that he’s seen the group unquestionably has his back.

I appreciate that Violet wanted to send Carver a note, but I’m very glad she also realized she was kind of being selfish so she didn’t. It’s not like he’s away on vacation; he’s in rehab. He’s fighting to save his own life right now, and her reaching out that way could have been harmful if he wasn’t in a place to hear it. Right now it isn’t about her or her guilt or her emotions about the past year…but it’s also valid she needed to work through it on her own, too. At some point, when he returns, she’ll have the chance to have a real chat with him.

I’m curious about Damon joining 51 and how long it lasts. And what’s going to happen with Lizzy now?

(Also, Violet was a badass for tearing the magnet off the wall to help save their patient.)

THE FLOOR: Well, Mike tried. And, look, I appreciate that he wanted to play, but he was also kind of a snob about it, so I was rooting against him in his matches. I did not think Shane would be the one to take him out, but Shane was just a surprise all over. (Shane being a Beyoncé fan was a hilarious twist, but it kind of killed me that two white men got that category.)

But, ow, the teen dramas category was painful to watch. I had a terrible feeling when THE O.C. got passed on, but I was making noises of discontent when BUFFY and DAWSON’S CREEK also didn’t get identified. Look, it’s not the easiest category—I actually didn’t know a handful of the more recent ones. But still.

CHICAGO P.D.: I loved how different the episode felt. Obviously, each character-centric episode has its own rhythm, but we got to see Burgess actually doing a bit more detective/promotion-related work, we saw Burzek at home with Mak…and, of course, their very loud neighbor which drove Burgess to the diner to begin with.

Marina Squerciati was fantastic, especially after the crime was in motion, as Burgess had to dig into her memories to see what she might have subconsciously picked up on. We could see the toll this was taking on Burgess, the burden she was carrying on her shoulders. (And it was directed so well by Stephen Surjik.)

And much like the Ruzek arc was about giving an identity to a young girl as he was facing his father losing his identity, what a heartbreaking and clever way of the show parallel that with Burgess: She had to use her history and memories to solve this case as Disco Bob continues to lose his own past.

But what a relief to have Burgess realize the toll the stress was taking on her and her relationship with Ruzek. This has been one of the biggest years (okay, 14 months) of their lives, both positive (engagement, promotion) and negative (Bob’s diagnosis, the whole nearly dying thing), and it would be easy to get lost in the chaos of it. I’m so glad Burgess actually engaged in self-care and booked a staycation at a local hotel for herself and Ruzek so they could unwind and make happy, stress-free memories.
