After going through a lot in their marriage in the present-day (therapy, suspected dog homicide, jealousy, to name just a few issues), GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY’s Doug (Alexander Hodge) and Alice (AnnaSophia Robb) find themselves in an unusual place on the Sunday, March 30 episode of the NBC drama: At peace.
“We’re kind of seeing Doug and Alice for the first time—that we’ve seen—find a bit of common ground, which is nice,” Hodge tells Give Me My Remote. “Early on, we saw a lot of tension, a lot of conflict, and now we’re kind of watching two people sort of find the same page again in their marriage. I personally think that’s a beautiful thing.”
“Doug’s goal moving forward, or what Doug wants in the future, I think, is to find a dynamic that works for the both of them,” he continues. “Doug’s been wanting a bit of a reset, just a bit, to reassess where they’re at and what their lives are looking like. And I think in the coming weeks, hopefully, Doug and Alice continue to find something that works for both of their dreams.”
There is still one wild card in the present timeline which viewers know has caused issues in the flash forward: Alice’s close friendship with Brett (Ben Rappaport). (In the future, Brett applied for a new job on Alice’s behalf, which would take her out of town. Brett and Doug subsequently got into a physical fight.)
“I think, as we saw in episode 4, he’s not stoked on Brett,” Hodge notes. “But I think for the most part, a lot of it comes down to trust. I think he trusts Alice. And I think there’s a lot of belief and sort of faith in their marriage and their partnership: That whatever Brett feels is something that can be communicated and navigated together with his wife, as long as they’re on the same page.”
“As we saw in 1×05 there’s a bit of a conversation that happens around it,” he continues. “They can openly talk about a bit of jealousy, or a bit of Brett’s romantic life, and so on. I think he’s able to acknowledge the feelings that Brett has, but also able to trust his wife and that they’re all adults. Hopefully, they can navigate it in a way that’s beneficial for them.”
In the meantime, at least, Doug is riding a professional high: His art finally getting attention and being sold.
“Doug finding success as an artist does wonders for his self-confidence,” Hodge previews. “And it really brings out a new side in Doug—he’s a lot more confident and playful as a result. I hope it lasts because I think if it doesn’t, I don’t know how he could handle any kind of failure or change after that.”
GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY airs Sunday, March 30 at 10/9c on NBC, before moving to its Fridays at 8/7c time slot on April 4.
