GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY’s Doug (Alexander Hodge) thought he finally had reached a turning point in his career, selling so much of his art he couldn’t keep up with the demand.
But a lunch between Doug’s wife, Alice (AnnaSophia Robb), and his mother, Patty (Nancy Travis), revealed the truth: Patty was secretly purchasing the art. Alice was horrified, but eventually opted to not tell her husband the truth.
“I think Doug’s going to have another perfectly reasonable reaction,” Hodge deadpans to Give Me My Remote. “It’s been like five episodes, and Doug’s been happy for five minutes.”
On a more serious note, if and when Doug finds out, Hodge predicts it will crush his character. “Look, I think, understandably, when the people closest to him, who mean the most to him, seemingly conspire against him, it’s hard for him to trust anything around him anymore,” he continues. “So, yeah, poor Doug.”
That’s not the only looming mystery in the series: The identity of Quiche, what the flash-forward group is calling the murdered person whose death they’re trying to cover up, is still very much up in the air.
Much like his colleagues, Hodge wasn’t let in immediately on whose murder the group was covering up in the flash-forwards. “For a long time, I really did want to know,” he admits. “I think for maybe the first few episodes, I was like, ‘God, I just really want to know.’…We all want to know how we can sort of use our performance around the identity, so we can know what to pepper in and what not to.”
“But I think we have such great editors, such great writers, and showrunners, that they protected us from any kind of misperformance,” he continues. “But I think maybe about halfway through the season, I started embracing not knowing. I thought it was really fun getting an episode every other week—we get an episode dropped into our inbox, and we’d start sort of discussing each week our breadcrumbs of information and who we thought it might be.”
It also made the week when Quiche’s identity was revealed extra exciting on set. “When we found out, we got the script at about 7 PM on Friday night,” Hodge recalls. “I had just wrapped shooting for the night, and I was in my dressing room and I heard screams in the hallway. My first thought was, ‘What the—? What the — just happened?’ And then my second thought was, ‘Oh, it’s that time.’ And I had to run out of my room into hair and makeup and shout every single time, ‘No spoilers! Don’t say anything before I leave!’”
“And I managed to get home and then, and then read it,” he continues. “It was kind of beautiful, actually. You only get to find out once, right? So I didn’t fast forward or scroll to the end of the script or so on. I really savored reading that episode because I wanted to feel the way the audience would feel. And let me just say, holy s—.”
Off-screen, the series is about to embark on a big change, too: The series moves to its new Fridays at 8/7c time slot on Friday, April 4.
“Oh, I’m so excited about an 8 PM slot, I tell you that,” Hodge enthuses. “Me, personally, that’s like, my ideal night. Dinner on the table at 7 PM, ready, even if it’s daylight savings. I love a 7 PM dinner…Therefore, once dinner’s wrapped up, I like to get myself a little tea, or a little beverage, and then I kick my feet up and I throw the telly on. And so [airing] Friday at 8 PM, I could not be more excited.”
