“Tricks of the Trade – Part One” and “Tricks of the Trade – Part Two” – When Sarah’s client is arrested after his business partner is found murdered, Billy attempts to help her handle the case while Matty and Olympia contend with a pressing confidential matter, on a special two-hour first season finale of the CBS Original Series MATLOCK, Thursday, April 17 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. After spending all season trying to keep her (real) home life from her work life, Matty’s (Kathy Bates) two worlds collide in the Thursday, April 17 season finale of MATLOCK. (The two-hour event kicks off at 9/8c on CBS.)

With Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) now aware that Matty was trying to find out who from the law firm hid documents that could have taken opioids off the market—which Matty blames for her daughter’s OD, years earlier—the duo had it out in the antepenultimate hour of season 1 as Olympia keeping Matty confined in the office overnight trying to get answers about Matty’s secret mission.

“Matty kept saying in episode 17, ‘Two things can be true: That I really care about you and I lied to you,’” MATLOCK showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman points out Give Me My Remote. “She really wants to make Olympia believe that because the friendship has come to mean so much to her.”

Olympia pivoted her plan in the final moments of the hour: She let Matty go home…and joined her, finally getting a glimpse of Matty’s true reality. (Which included meeting Matty’s husband, Edwin, whom Matty had been lying about as part of her cover.)

Now, in the season finale, Olympia learns exactly what Matty knows, and has to figure out what her own next move should be…and who she can trust.

“The central love story that I’ve always talked about is between Olympia and Matty,” Urman says. “So when [Matty] gets to be herself, there’s so much danger that comes with that because she’s been lying so much to Olympia. But there is also some sense of being able to [actually] talk to Olympia without all of the walls between them. And there is something, I think, very freeing about that for Matty, even though it’s scary.”

MATLOCK, Thursdays, 9/8c, CBS
